The group Inertia caught my attention immediately with their large brightly colored pieces. Their work was all very different in subject matter yet went together so beautifully, as did most groups that were in the show. This specific group had pieces across the gallery from each other, which I found very interesting because it isn’t something I would initially think to do. The pairing of the highly compacted pieces of Jenna’s next to the ones with a singular object like the sun, were a good choice! A nice rest for the eye, and a good way to maintain the viewer’s attention in my opinion. Then lastly, the actual skills of the painters are phenomenal ! Some of my favorite in the show.
The next group is Obscuring. I really appreciated the different types of movement displayed in each of the works-whether that be physical or societal. The strands of fabric seemed soft and inviting, drawing me into the area and then leading me to Kelly’s paintings; each one packed full of tiny details you’d miss if you didn’t take your time to really look. I also really enjoyed the off-balanced hanging of the pieces, I think it worked well and made the random gallery pole feel like it belonged in the space rather than obstructing it.
Next is Fractured Space, which I loved because of how large and bright a lot of the pieces were. They demanded your attention whether you wanted to give it or not. The pieces were bold yet almost whimsical in a way. I enjoyed that they were in the corner across from Tactile Accumulation because it was basically the complete opposite visually. Lots of white space, color, and (mostly) large vs. small, compact, muted (for the most part). It created a nice dynamic.
Lastly, my group Tactile Accumulation! I’m very proud of how it turned out, and it was definitely an eye opener. Collaboration can be hard, but I think we turned it into something really nice. We accomplished the goal of accumulation for sure, but I think it goes beyond that and I feel the need to point out how carefully and precisely every part was placed. Everything you see was considered and has a reason for being. We created the shadows, the marks, the overlaps, all with a goal of adding as much depth and layers as we could. Something you wanted to reach out and touch, but you know you can’t so it becomes an itch that has to sit with you as you stare longingly.
(sorry i took a lot of photos)
