Mengyun Li is a Ph.D. candidate in the Cognitive Systems Engineering Laboratory studying under Dr. Mike Rayo. Prior to joining the Cognitive Systems Engineering Laboratory, she has planned and led process improvement projects in the manufacturing industry resulting in labor cost and lead time reduction.
In addition, she managed a product quality and safety program for Georgia-Pacific, a leading company in the packaging industry. Her work was instrumental in achieving and maintaining industry certifications allowing the company to enter new markets.
Her research has focused on two primary areas:
- design strategies that support human sensemaking, especially in joint cognitive systems involving AI/ML algorithms.
- designing and implementing operational evaluation capabilities that facilitate anticipation and sustain resilient performance in human-machine systems.
Her extensive industry experience in leading various process improvement projects, working closely with frontline workers, addressing customer needs, and advising management of project opportunities helped her understand componential improvements do not always lead to intended organizational outcomes. Her academic training and research experience equip her with a systems perspective, her ability to work with diverse stakeholders, conduct user research, understand complex work domains, and evaluate decision support tools in joint human-machine systems helps her recommend changes on a system scale.
She is expected to graduate in 2025. Her future work interests are in the design and development of advanced decision-support systems that support joint human-machine performance in complex and high-stakes settings.
