Text Review- Black-ish

A show that I enjoy watching with my dad is Black-ish that was created by Kenya Barris. The show is a about a black upper middle-class family. The parents, Rainbow who is a doctor and Andre who is an advertising executive do everything that they can so that their own children do not have to grow up struggling the same way that they did but also teach them what the world is like growing up Black in America. My dad and I like this show because it is easy to relate to and a lot of the lessons that Rainbow and Andre are teaching their kids my parents also taught me.

The episode that I watch was episode 7 from season 7, Babes in Boyland. The episode is about how the parents are treat one of their twins, Diane, differently from the other twin, Jack. They yell at Diane for finding her secret Instagram and seeing her pictures and wearing a boy’s sweatshirt. The pictures that Diane posted were of her all covered up in different tank tops or crop tops. After Daine gets lectures about the way she dresses and post she talks to her twin brother and find out that their parents liked Jack’s post when he was without a shirt. Diane brings it up to her parents that they treat her differently from her brother because she is a girl and the sexist world that they live in. It was not fair for her to be lectured about her taking in pictures fully clothes why her parents encourage her to take pictures half naked. (13:30)(https://abc.com/shows/blackish/video/vdka21223338)

The problems that Diane was going through are some of the same problems that Marji goes through and talks about in Persepolis. During the war, her and other women were told to cover up and dress differently. She talks about how in school the girls were told to cover their hair even when it was really hot outside so they do not distract or temp boys. She also talks about how she was stopped while walking by two other women who treated her differently for wearing a jean jacket. She talks about how it was hard for her growing up with people telling her what to do with her body and a lot of other things. We all live in a world woman are not treated as equals compared to men. A woman will do the same thing as a man and she will be shamed for doing it. It has been a problem from the beginning of time. Women are continuously being told to “cove up”, “act like a lady” or slut-shamed compared to the famous phrase that excuses boys’ behavior “boys will be boys”. Diane was not pleased with the mistreatment she was getting and want to make her parents understand that treating her differently from her twin because she was a girl is a big problem that so many girls go through. Her parents should not have lectured her in the way that they did but made their home into a safe envoirment for all their kids to feel like they are equals no matter their gender. (17:35)

At the end, Rainbow and Andre noticed that they were wrong for treating the twins differently. They understood that the world would treat them differently and not be fair to Diane but as their parents they could not do that. We as world need to understand that treating women differently is wrong and that no one is better than anyone else. The discrimination that women have faced for century should not be something that we continue to put into the heads of children. The idea that women are less and or should be treated differently is something that no one should believe.

You Is This. . . Krystal Webb

17:10:07 Hello everyone, my name is Krystal Webb, and today on my podcast, I will be talking about racism against Asian and Asian Americans.

17:10:17 Firstly I would like to say that everything that has been happening with people being openly racist and violence towards Asian and Asian Americans is such a disgusting thing and I do not agree with it at all.

17:10:32 There has been a lot of racism towards Asian and Asian American people, for so many years.

17:10:39 When Asians first started coming to America to start a new life for themselves and their families.

17:10:46 It was not always easy for them when they got jobs, they were constantly being underpaid for their hard work, or even passed up jobs because of their race.

17:10:58 People took advantage of them often for their desperation to make it in a new country.

17:11:04 We talked about loan sharks in the weeks for reading the leavers by Lisa Ko, and several Asian people fell victim of a loan shark.

17:11:18 The racism towards Asians and Asian Americans have been deeply rooted in American history for so long, but over the last maybe year and a half or so. It has been more public and more common to hear about almost no one is unfamiliar with the topic of

17:11:38 the corona virus at this point. This virus has taken the lives of millions. It has changed how everyone around the world lives their lives now.

17:11:47 It has also put a lot of hate and anger and so many people’s hearts.

17:11:52 And so many people take it out on Asian and Asian American people.

17:11:58 The former president of the United States, Donald Trump played a huge role and the blame game, and using Asian and Asian American people as escape goat, in my opinion.

17:12:10 If you are unfamiliar with a term of scape goat. Google dictionaries describe it as a person who is blamed for the wrong doings mistakes or faults of others, especially with up for reasons of expediency.

17:12:27 Donald Trump on so many occasions, refer to a virus as quote Kung Fu.

17:12:38 And, quote unquote, China virus.

17:12:40 He also bragged about how many other names he could come up with it, while his maskless fans and supporters cheered him on behind him at rallies.

17:12:51 Firstly Donald Trump saying something like this is not surprising at all. He is, constantly saying things that are races xenophobic homophobic, and also sexist. by Donald Trump saying things like kung fu and China virus.

17:13:08 He has put a huge target on all Asian and Asian Americans backs.

17:13:16 With him having so much power and being a political figure.

17:13:22 He has by the things he has done and said he has made America, a safe place for so many people to be openly racist and violence towards others.

17:13:51 He is 100% wrong for saying that and using them as scapegoats since last year in 2020 hate crimes against Asian  and Asian American people and America has risen 150%, according to article written by Kimmy Yang, which can be found on the NBC news website.

17:13:58 This number is so high, but it hurts my heart thinking about how so many people being attacked.

17:14:04 And it makes me wonder how many attacks are not going public or being

17:14:13 being heard of, How many people are being quiet about their attacks.

17:14:19 The attack that I will be discussing in my podcast today is the attack on the 65 year old Asian woman who was racially and violently attacked on Monday March 29 2021 at about 11:40 a m.

17:14:36 While this woman was walking in Manhattan, she was on her way to church. When 38 year old Brandon Elliot, who is out on parole on life parole violently attacked her.

17:14:49 He kicked her to the ground said that she did not belong here called her Asian and use profound language after while she was on the ground, he continued to stop on her head, several times before walking away, leaving her helpless on the ground.

17:15:08 While watching this video I did not think I could get any more upset.

17:15:13 There was a couple people inside the hotel that where the attack happened in front of near ended, while watching the entire video.

17:15:25 The people did absolutely nothing. Near the end of the video.

17:15:31 There was a man who walked to the front of the door and close the doors to the hotel, his action said that he was not going to help this defensless woman, and that he was not going to get involved.

17:15:45 Brandon Ellie is now in police custody, but this is not the first time he had trouble with the police. He has been in jail for the murder of his own mother for the past two decades.

17:15:59 This video is very hard for me to watch for several different reasons.

17:16:04 from people watching an elderly woman being beat and not helping to watching Brandon  stomp on her head constantly.

17:16:17 Brandon was Brandon Elliott was a black man and I believe that is a very important thing to notice in this video.

17:16:23 I believe that is important because I say this as.

17:16:28 So, I believe, almost every black person in this world has faced some sort of racial harassment or being treated wrong because of their race, including myself, at some point of their life.

17:16:43 I don”t believe that Brandon Elliot was an exception. And I”m sure that he has faced some toward some type of racism and the part of his life as a minority who has been as he being a minority who has been discriminated against.

17:17:01 I do not understand and cannot comprehend why he will go over and turn around and treat a minority, just as bad when he understands the pain and the part racism plays on a person”s life.

17:17:20 No human should have to fear for their lives, or, or, or experiences type of racism or violence. It is so bad that so many Asian and Asian American people in this world.

17:17:35 In America, do not feel safe leaving their homes to go grocery shopping just to walk around the neighborhood, or do their simple errands.

17:17:47 racism cannot be ignored any longer.

17:17:49 It needs to be talked about between everyone. I even believe that children need to be talked to about racism, so that they can understand and learn that it is not okay to treat people differently based on their skin.

17:18:05 They need to understand quality and to love one another.

17:18:10 If racism is continued to be ignored.

17:18:13 Then the next generations are going to continue be racist and things are not going to get better.

17:18:22 It should not be one race against the world, or one race against another.

17:18:29 We are all humans at the end of the day, who determine who determines which race is better than the other.

17:18:38 And who determined who is allowed in this country, and who does not no race is better than the other and we need to do better protecting the ones who are being discriminated against and racially harassed.

17:18:54 We need to educate people more. This virus is absolutely not one person”s fault or group of peoples fall.

17:19:17 And this world needs to understand that more.

17:19:06 Yes, we are all upset that our lives have changed and that so many people died from the  virus, and it”s okay to be upset.

17:19:15 What is not okay, is to blame innocent people and take matters into our own hands.

17:19:25 I, as a part time teacher am constantly praying that the students I have grow up to love each other, and that they can make a difference in the world for the better, and that they can see people for who they are and not what they look like.

17:19:43 We need the people in political power to do better and holding people accountable, and not having any tolerance between any type of racism

17:19:58 is hard for me to understand why so many people have this route at hate towards people because they are different. And as a minority, I am constantly wondering how things can change.

17:20:14 Being Asian is not a Virus but being Racist is a virus. Thank You.

Diary of Systemic Injustice- Asian Hate Crimes

Krystal Webb

An example of systemic injustice that I have been noticing a lot in the news in the last year is how so many people are randomly attacking Asian and Asian American people on the street. It started when we first heard about the Corona virus and when people in the United States started getting infected with the virus. The first terrible video that I saw was a man attaching an elderly Asian man on the train or bus and no one stopped him. There are so many other videos and cases similar to that. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/asian-attack-san-francisco-hate-crime-b1823163.html

Former president of the united states called the corona virus the “kung-flue”. Him saying that was racist because he took a form of fighting that originated in Asia and turned into a phrase to put blame and mock Asian people. He put a target on them. Because so many people look up and follow him blindly, it gave other people a reason to think that all Asian people are to blame for the virus. When a leader is openly racist towards a group of people, they make a safe environment for others to be openly racist as well. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/20/trump-covid-19-kung-flu-racist-language

There are a lot of stereotypes that people associated with Asians and Asian American people. The model minority is a stereotype that we talked about in class while reading The Leavers. Many people use it as a way to believe that all Asian and Asian American people as really smart and hardworking people, or very attractive people. It is saying that they are the ideal type of minority that people want to have in a country because they are successful. It puts a lot of pressure on people, and it is wrong to classify them as perfect.  Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, there has been about 3,800 documented hate crimes against Asian and Asian American people. I cannot imagine how high the number of attacks that do not get reported. In the shooting that happened on March 16 that six of the eight of the people that were wrongfully murder where Asia American many people were upset how the media refereed to them. They acknowledge the victims as “Asian descent”. By acknowledging them that way it makes the victims out to be immigrants. The victims were not immigrants, but they should have been acknowledged as Asian Americans according to Two stereotypes that diminish the humanity of the Atlanta shooting victims – and all Asian Americans. Many media sources stereotyped them as a model minority with out even realizing it.

There are many cases with Asian people in America are being assaulted randomly. The only reason people are assaulting them is because they are Asian and no other reason. They are considered hate crimes because it is a hate crime to attack and harm a group of people based on their race. Asian people are being blamed for something that they have no control over. People are upset because of the world pandemic and take their anger out on Asian people. Asian and Asian American people are being used as a scapegoat for this virus that is effect so many people around the world. People are taking their anger out on a whole group of people and believe that they are responsible for something that is out of their control. It is so bad that some people have to escort elderly Asian people so that they can feel safe on the streets doing simple things.

There have been many people protesting to the Asian hate to bring awareness to others that at this time Asian people are in danger just because they are Asian and it wrong. For things to change, there needs to be a harsh punishment for anyone who is caught assaulting Asian people like time in jail and a fine. People need to understand that what is happening is not necessarily any single person’s fault and blaming one race fixes nothing at all. People are protesting and I believe that will change things. Protesting brings light to the hate so that other people can know that terrible things are happening. It also encourages other people to speak out against the hate. People are also stepping up in helping Asian American people by helping them do their errors and walking with them so they can feel safe. If people want this virus to change, people need to wear mask, not have big parties and also follow the rules to protect themselves. Attacking and blaming Asian people is racist and no one should have to live in fear. If you see something orstem a person being attacked because of their race, do not just watch what is happening; stand up and do something to put an end to it.

Jhumpa Lahiri- Interpreter of Maladies Context Presentation

While reading the Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, you understand that it is the story about different Indian couples and their relationship. The part that stood out to me the most is the relation that was viewed by the eyes of a young child. Her family often invited their friend over to their house, Mr. Pirzada, to have dinner and to watch the news and to have someone to talk with. He was separated from his wife and 7 daughters at the time because he was given a grant to work on something. Often he would come over for dinner and watch the news to see what was happening with the war with his home country, Bangladesh.

There was a lot of things that lead up to the war. Pakistan first gain independence as a country with two different areas according to Anam Zakaria. The East part of Pakistani is now just Pakistani and the East part of Pakistani is Bangladesh today. Bengali rights were not being respected nor was it being made important and many Bangladesh people were upset.

“The refusal to accept Bengali as a state language of Pakistan in the early years after Partition, economic disparity between the two parts, the hegemony of the West Pakistani ruling elite over Pakistan, martial laws, and a demeaning attitude towards Bengali culture and the Bengali population soured relations between the two parts” (Zakaria).

The country at the time was also divided by religion. The war in 1971 started because Bangladesh, which is the East part of Pakistan, wanted to separate themselves from the West part of Pakistan. The East part of Pakistani is now just Pakistani and the East part of Pakistani is Bangladesh today. It lead to many innocent Bengali people being murdered by the Pakistani Army.  It was a short war that did not even last 2 weeks. The war was won on December 16, 1971.

Before the war was over, people left the country because they felt unsafe with all of the violence happening in the area. There was around 10 million people leaving and going to India. People who leave their home country for safety reasons and wars are considered refugees. Bangladesh had to give up and fight hard for their independence from Pakistan. At the end of the war, about 300,000 to 3 million people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands of women were raped according to Anam Zakaria. On December 16, 1971 Pakistani army surrender ending the war.

Jhumpa Lahiri- Interpreter of Maladies Context Presentation

Contex Presentation: The Leavers 1-150

The story starts off when Deming Guo is being picked up from school after staying late by his mother Polly. His mother works at a nail salon working hard to provide for her and her soon. She hates her job because it takes a strain on her body and her hands are often in pain. We find out that Deming Guo lives in an apartment with his mom, her boyfriend Leon, his best friend Michel and his mother Vivian. They make small conversation at first and we learn a little about Polly. We learned that she stopped going to school sometime when she was in the 8th grade. She was firm with his grades because she wanted him to better than what she did but she was a loving mother. She enjoyed traveling to new places.

Polly tells him on their walk home that they will be moving to Florida very soon. Polly got a new better job that could lead to  more opportunities for them the news that they are leaving to a different state is hard for Deming to hear because he does not want to leave Michel and the others. Throughout the day Deming thinks about all the things that Florida may have and he starts to get excited about he and his mother moving to Florida. The next morning, he asks her when they will move but his mother’s responds surprise him. His mother tells him that they are not moving to Florida. That is the last conversation that he has with his mother for a long time. When he and his best friend get home that day from school, they notice that his mother is not there. The boys continue eating, watching t.v. and hanging around the house until someone else gets home. When Vivian and Leon get home, they are shocked to see that the boys did not have a proper dinner yet and that they could not find Polly or get a hold of her. After a few days and his mom not coming home he gets a taste of freedom. For a young boy to not his mom around it meant that he did not have to go to school, he can eat as much pizza that he wanted and do things that his mom normally would not let him do. After a while and not getting answers of where his mom. Is at he gets scared that she is in danger and does anything to get her back. He tries his hardest in school to get better grades and stays out of trouble he even tries to be nice to a classmate who is not always nice to him. But nothing he does gets his mom back.

The book skips into ten years of Deming’s life and he is at a concert with his friend, Roland, to perform on stage. While waiting backstage, he is drinking more than he should. While on stage Deming notices that he does not know the songs very well and runs of to china town. He gets frustrated when a woman asks him directions and he cannot give it to her because he forgot most of his native language. While he is there, he goes through his emails on his phone and notices one from his old best friend Michel. He says in the email that he knows some information on his lost mother. Deming ignores his email. He could have ignored it because he feared upsetting his adoptive parents or finding the real reason his mom disappeared may hurt him.

The next day he goes out to have breakfast with his adopted parents. The meeting we find out more about what he is going through and some of the thoughts that his parent have.  His parents are professors at a Carlough College. Peter talks about how upsetting it is to him that many of the minority students are pushing more ethnic classes and how their protests are disruptive to his class. Peter says a few racist comments and Deming calls him out on it. This conversation shows how out of touch his new parents are and that they do not understand that Demings and others see things differently in the world and are treated differently because they are not white. We also learn that Deming has a gambling problem and is not doing so well in school at the moment. He borrowed a lot of money from his friend Angel that he cannot pay back. He values his friendship with her because she relates to him because she is also a Chines-American who was adopted. She understands him in ways that his new parents do not. His parents pulled strings and wants him to apply to the college that they work at so that they can keep an eye on him and make sure that he is not gambling and going to meetings. He agrees to do the paperwork because he does not want to disappoint them but does not tell them that he may be able to find his real mom

The book goes back into his childhood. Deming is really upset that Polly left him because at a time she promised never to leave him again. In one of the first few chapters Deming is remember a time when he first reconnects with his mom in New York. We learned that Polly gave Deming to his grandfather to be raised why she lived in New York. Deming and his grandfather lived in China at the time. When his grandfather passed away, he stayed with his mother. On one of the days out together she promised that she would never leave him again.

After a while and his mom not coming back in a few months Vivian takes him to a different place alone. She tells him that because his mother left that she is unable to provide for both of the boys and that she would one day get him soon. After a while of him staying with a foster family who he comfortable with he learns that he has to leave because he gets adopted. His adopted parents’ names are Peter and Kay. His new adopted parents slowly start to change him in ways that he is not comfortable with and are slowly changing the things in his life that makes him Deming. They would tell him to speak English any time he would talk in his native language and started to call him Daniel because it was easier for them. By doing so they are taking away his identity and not recognizing his culture as a Chinse- American child. We now understand how he was adopted.

So after he is adopted and they slowly start to change him so that he can fit better in an American family. He hears how Peter and Kay both find it hard raising him in their area because of his race. He also hears that his real mom moved back to china. He does not know for sure if she really did nor how they got that information. We also learn how he became friend and when he first meets Angel. His parents took him to New York to meet friends and their adopted daughter Angle. He was not her friend at first understandably but later their adventures and common life brought them close together. The two even goes to his old neighborhood with anyone knowing. That is when he learns that there was a new family in his home.

Back to the present time He finial responds back to the email. He meets up with Michael and learns about some of the new things that been happening in his life. The two meet up with Vivian and Michael is hurt by seeing her even though she is happy to see him. At this point he learns more information of his mom and how he sent to foster care. The reason was because his mom was in a lot of debt when she disappeared, and it effected Vivian and gives the number to Polly’s old boyfriend Leon to him to get more answers.

The Leavers by Lisa Ko
