I chose to do a sample commodity chain pathway of De Beers because they are involved with every step of the diamond commodity chain. This map illustrates a sample pathway that one of their diamonds might take from start to finish. Companies look for exploration sites and if it looks like a feasible location, they will start extracting diamonds. As the map shows, an exploration site can also be an extraction site (Botswana, South Africa). Once the diamond is extracted, it is shipped off to a sorting site in India; this sorting site also cuts and polishes the diamond. Once these steps are complete, the diamond gets shipped off to jewelry manufacturers and retailers that also happened to be completed in the same city (Israel, Hong Kong, Signapore). De Beers had a lot more sites for retail outlets than it did for any other step of the commodity chain process.
