Instead of yearning to discover new horizons, and pushing the boundary of discovery for Spain, he was greedy, and many of the decisions he made only benefitted himself. “Columbus did yearn for the glory of discovery but also for gold, and lots of it. And the indigenous peoples he encountered were not long fooled by the paltry gifts Columbus offered….Columbus’s enterprise in the Bahamas was imperialistic.” (Desai,180). Columbus’s motives can be summed up in one phrase—God, Gold, and Glory. He believed he was a missionary, and was therefore responsible for spreading Christianity to these new people. He forced many into Christianity without considering that the natives already had their own religion. He also was extremely greedy. He enslaved these people to help search for Gold. This search for gold lead him to overtake much of the land controlled by the natives.
