What does one think when they hear the word hero? A hero, by definition, is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. People in the likes of George Washington, Harriet Tubman, and Martin Luther King Jr are commonly categorized as heroes by much of the population. Their accomplishments within their lifetimes shaped the course of history and made an impact on the people around them. Due to misconceptions found in the textbooks of our children and other unreliable sources, Christopher Columbus is also deemed a “hero” for his accomplishments of discovering North America and creating a spring board for colonization, but when one digs deeper into accounts of Columbus’s journey, there is a substantial amount of evidence that shows another side of Columbus. As stated by Mark Antonio Wright in the National Review, Columbus “was a slaver, a capitalist, and a murderer of millions who embarked on a voyage motivated only by greed, which brought European imperialism to the shores of the “New World” and laid waste the ancient indigenous peoples there” (Wright).
