Letter to Stephanie

Dear, Stephanie

Hello, I’m Dajin Choi from South Korea. My English name is Amy, so you can just call me Amy. I’m an exchange student for Autumn 2018. I double major in Human Environment & Design and Cognitive Science. Since I major in HED, I did some design works in my home university. The interesting point is that I’ve never done any art works before I entered to the university. This is why I always want to learn about design.

I decided to enroll this class because of new experience. I want to have a design class different from classes that I had in Korea. I know this class is not only about design but I read an introduction which said that this class includes some photoshop works. I want to earn new experience and communication skills from this class.

Because I thought that this class would be composed only by lecture, I really concern about interacting with middle school students. I’m not the one who is familiar with middle students. Besides, I’m not good at English. Therefore, there must be some troubles when I communicate with them. Though the conversations with others definitely helps me improve my English skills, I’m just worried about it.

I think that art and design are different. While art is about aesthetic, design should consider more about user experience. And I think digital art is a combination of art and design. You can use digital technology to work precisely and apply various artistic methods.

People are more likely to be attracted by things visually good. I think it is an instinct of pursuing aesthetic pleasure. Also, they have an instinct of expressing. People want to interact with other people who can listen to their expressions. This is why art can help students to be emotionally stable. Students can express themselves and communicate with other people by art. In addition, art has no answer. Students can do whatever they want.

I think empathy is consideration. People can consider others by understanding their feelings. Since human can’t exist by themselves, they should interact with others. Without consideration it’s difficult to survive in society. They have to practice having empathy from an early age. It’s hard to learn empathy when they’re already grown up.

I’m really happy you became my professor. I will try to follow you as much as I can.

Thanks

Best regards,

Dajin Choi
