G.O.A.L.S.-Review

As of the end of the year, I am still able to make ample amount of time on the weekends to serve my home community. Although I served the Columbus local communities with GES, I regret to say that I have failed my own goal of learning as much about the communities surrounding the university as possible. In the up coming semester, I will continue to working on community engagement in Columbus while remaining highly active in my home community.

As my student career continues in OSU, I remain on track with the unchanged goal of graduating in 4 years. I understood most of my classes this year quite well, with my chemistry weak point improving marginally from high school with the help of study groups, professors, and TAs.

Year in Review

The past year is perhaps the most exciting year of my life. I learned conduct every aspect of my life by myself such as filing out paper works, filing taxes, finding a job/internship, study on my own schedule, and varies other responsibilities that makes me truly on my own.

The most important thing that has happened to me this year is making new and good friends. Although many high school friends also attends OSU, they often lived on the opposite side of campus, studies in other colleges, and changed their life style/common grounds, thus making friends more distant. Meeting Kevin Kraus and Jared Weist and finding somethings in common and the ability to trust and count on each other makes college experience better.

The most exciting thing that has happened to me this year is being entered into the annual AEV competition. Although no awards were won, it was a memorable and exciting team work process that allowed me to demonstrate my CAD abilities as well as my hands on working ability.

zaboomafoo_group_project_ges Our presentation for alternative energy is an overview on Thorium based nuclear reactors. Thorium based nuclear reactors has long been considered an ideal alternative to the current Uranium based reactors for several reasons. First, Thorium is three times as abundant on Earth as Uranium, thus providing a more lasting energy source. Second, Thorium reactors does not produce weapon capable waste. Third, Thorium can be adapted to current nuclear reactors, thus allowing current reactors to be reused. Although still in the testing phase, Uranium reactors running on Thorium fuel is more than viable. Last, Thorium produces far less waste (up to 1000 times less) than Uranium in quantity. Our group chose to study this topic because we believe Thorium can be a safer, longer lasting, and greener alternative to the current Uranium based nuclear power. More importantly, unlike other sources of energy, Thorium fueled reactors does not require a brand new infrastructure just due to the fact that it is a new type of nuclear fuel.

About Me

IMG_3730[1941]My name is Heyi (pronounced as ‘hey’). I’m a sophomore from Copley, Ohio, a small town just west of Akron, Ohio. I’m currently a mechanical engineering pre-major, with hope of finding a job in either the automotive industry or the aerospace industry. Starting in the fall semester of 2017, I am living on the 7th floor of Torres House as well as working as an OA for Torres House. On my free time, I enjoy seeing the nature through either cycling or hiking, coding small C++ programs, building plastic models, and hanging out with close friends. I’m looking forward to my life as an undergraduate student at OSU, as well as my life after OSU.
