Crafting Teaching Statements and Teaching Portfolios – April 1st 1PM-2:30PM

Teaching statements and teaching portfolios serve a variety of purposes. Instructors are commonly asked to submit these documents at pivotal moments in their careers: for the academic job market, annual reviews, teaching awards, and during the promotions and tenure process. In addition, the process of putting together a teaching portfolio can be intrinsically valuable for instructors, stimulating continuous reflection and growth and reconnecting them to the joy and value of teaching.

Although teaching statements and portfolios address many different audiences, and practices can vary between academic departments, following a few guidelines can help instructors communicate their values and goals, practices, and indicators of effectiveness. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore and discuss practices for documenting their teaching. University community members at any career stage or level of teaching experience are welcome to attend.

If you have registered for this event, or are on the waitlist and require an accommodation such as live captioning or interpretation to participate, please contact drakeinstitute@osu.edu. Requests should be made at least two weeks prior to the event, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.

All members of the university community are welcome in Drake Institute activities, programs, services, and employment —regardless of age, ancestry, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, genetic information, HIV/AIDS status, military status, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, or any other bases under the law.

Institute for Teaching and Learning programming is offered in accordance with university guidelines associated with in-person and remote activities. The Institute will inform registrants of delivery modifications should those guidelines change.

Open 2025 – 2026 Graduate Associate Positions with the Drake Institute

The Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning is currently seeking to hire several Graduate Instructional Consultants (GTAs) to begin work with the institute in Autumn 2025. Consultants provide individual instructional consultations to graduate student instructors on campus, develop and facilitate workshops and learning communities on pedagogical topics for a graduate student audience, and assist staff at the institute in other research tasks, including the development of teaching and learning resources.

50% FTE (20 hours/week) and 25% FTE (10 hours/week) positions are available. The 50% positions are considered full time employment for a graduate student and include a tuition waiver. The 25% positions may be most useful for graduate students who would like to supplement an existing GRA, GTA, or GAA position with additional funding. Employment as a Graduate Instructional Consultant may be of interest to graduate students who intend to seek teaching-focused academic positions as well as those exploring alternatives to traditional academic employment.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by April 13th, 2025.
