SP25 Course Announcement: PHYS 8820

From Kevin Singh, Assistant Professor of Physics:

I will be teaching a course on “Architectures for Quantum Information Processing” in Spring 2025. This course will discuss experimental implementations of quantum information processors (please see the course synopsis below). It is based on a similar class offered in the Quantum Science and Engineering PhD program at the University of Chicago that many students widely regard as the best class in the program. A prerequisite for this class is that students should be comfortable with matrix representations of Hamiltonians. We’ll also use Python (specifically the Quantum Toolbox in Python – QuTiP) to numerically simulate fundamental interactions in different quantum information processing platforms.

Course synopsis:

This course emphasizes the experimental aspects of quantum information and focuses on physical implementations and architectures. Several candidates for quantum information systems will be discussed, including trapped ions, neutral atoms, superconducting circuits, semiconducting quantum dots, and linear optics. Students will develop an understanding of the basic physics of these systems and their relative merits in a variety of quantum information applications. Students will use numerical simulations (e.g. Quantum Toolbox in Python – QuTiP) to gain understanding and intuition for different quantum information architectures, as well as to develop computational skills.

The class will be on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:35 to 10:55 am in Caldwell Lab 277.
