Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:
Global awareness improved upon my involvement with Camp Kesem. In this club, I am surrounded by different people that I would not have met otherwise, with a common goal of helping children, whose parents have/have had cancer. I got to learn why they joined and what they want to get out from participating in Camp Kesem.

Original Inquiry:
In the NASA Big Idea Challenge, I am working with a group to design a Mars Greenhouse for a competition that will include teams from across the country. We would be working together as a team, along with a member of the faculty and NASA researchers to help with this project.

Academic Enrichment:
I have taught myself how to work with various APIs and new aspects of programming that was not familiar to me before. This would help me improve my skills as a programmer and push myself to learn more about a career that I am interested in pursuing.

Leadership Development:
I was a tutor at Mathnasium. The way that this involvement contributed to my development as a leader was that it made me responsible for managing a group of students and overseeing their education in the field of mathematics. This also helped with making sure that I mastered the material that I was teaching. In order to teach the students effectively, I had to be flexible in the way that I thought the given topic. I adapted my teaching methods so that they can understand the topic.

Service Engagement:
An activity which gets me involved with the community is Camp Kesem. The way that I plan to engage with the community through this club is by partaking in the events that they host. Through this club, I have been made aware of the struggles of the children whose parents have/have had cancer.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

Recently I learned about truss in Statics (MECHENG 2010). Here we learned how to calculate the reactions occurring at different places within the body of the object. An example problem in which we used this knowledge is shown in the picture below. In this case, I implemented my knowledge of the method of joints to figure out the forces occurring between each joint. I find this important because I intend on becoming a mechanical engineer. Therefore, during my career, it would be expected that I should be able to understand and calculate the forces occurring at different parts of a structure so that I can tell if the structure is safe.  A strategy that I learned when approaching this problem is to start by treating the entire structure as a rigid body and solve for any forces I can that way and then plug that in and simplify the other forces acting at other joints within the structure, so that I can solve for the different forces acting at the different joints.

About Me

I am Arko Chatterjee (the goofy person on the left). I planon graduating with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Computer Science. I am a part of three organizations (Camp Kesem, Underwater Robotics and Tae Kwon Do Club). Camp Kesem is an organization to help kids whose parents have been affected by cancer and to give them a chance to act like kids with college students. Members of the Underwater Robotics club has the mission of constructing an autonomous robot that can function underwater and I am excited about being a part of this. Finally, Taekwondo club is focused on providing its members a martial arts education and providing them the opportunities to show off their skills at competitions and demonstrations. I have a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and so I enjoy the martial arts sessions.
