Linux-related Problems

Red Hat pushed out the RHEL59 update this morning which caused a bunch of Linux problems:

Linuxfs was rebooted at ~9:50 am to fix NFS issues
Anyone still having Linux workstation issues should reboot before contacting Support.

All web services were restored as of 11:00 am

Samba is still broken on Linuxfs, so shares to Windows & Mac OS systems are off-line

Scheduled Maintenance Window

All CBC computing services, including Windows and Linux file services, print services, and networking, will be unavailable on Tuesday, 14-Aug, from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. During this time we will perform server and network switch hardware and software maintenance. Please be aware that services might appear to be available before midnight, but availability will be intermittent.

Mail, LinuxFS, RHEL5 server & workstation issues

All Linux systems running RHEL5 are currently experiencing stability issues. This includes the Chemistry mail server, LinuxFS, legacy web servers, and some workstations. The mail server is back on-line, but it with likely crash again. I think I’ve figured out a solution to the issues, but it won’t be in place until late Sunday afternoon at best. –Steve Fabian

Maintenance scheduled for Saturday

We need to perform time-critical maintenance that will require interruptions of computing services late Wednesday and again on Saturday:

– Wednesday, 14-Dec, at 11:00 p.m. the Windows file server winfs will be briefly unavailable so that we can increase allocations of various virtual resources.

– Saturday, 17-Dec, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., all central departmental computing services will be unavailable, including web, printing, e-mail, and Linux & Windows file services.  Please note that users of ASC Exchange for e-mail will not experience an interruption of that service.

We apologize for the interruptions and for the inconvenience they might cause you.

Services coming back online

After a weekend of problems, Chemistry computing services are slowly coming back online.  File, print, and web services are now available.  Please restart your computer if you’re still experiencing problems.

The Chemistry VPN service will be down until Tuesday.
