Problems with some CBC Linux systems this morning

Some of our Linux servers are unable to use the Chemistry Active Directory to authenticate logons this morning.  We are still debugging this problem.  Users are unable to SSH to linuxfs, and the CBC Computer Support staff are unable to use the trouble ticket system.  If you are waiting for a response to a particular problem, or need help this morning with any other computing needs, please call 614.292.0848.

2:10 p.m. Update:  All services have been restored.  [Tech summary]  Some of the older and/or web Linux servers use LDAPS.  When the SSL cert for the LDAP server expired, the server could not renew it because the certificate authority needed to check the revocation list, but the certificate revocation list cert was itself expired.  We had to boot the offline CA to get a new list cert.

Mail, LinuxFS, RHEL5 server & workstation issues

All Linux systems running RHEL5 are currently experiencing stability issues. This includes the Chemistry mail server, LinuxFS, legacy web servers, and some workstations. The mail server is back on-line, but it with likely crash again. I think I’ve figured out a solution to the issues, but it won’t be in place until late Sunday afternoon at best. –Steve Fabian

Computer services outage Friday night, 9/30/11, starting at 6:00 p.m

There will be an outage of some computer services tomorrow night.  We expect the outage to affect only Windows file services.  However, there is a slight possibility that the scope of the outage will be wider.  The outage will start at 6:00 p.m., and will last until 9:00 p.m.  We again want to apologize for the inconvenience caused by the outages of computer services over the last week.

Services coming back online

After a weekend of problems, Chemistry computing services are slowly coming back online.  File, print, and web services are now available.  Please restart your computer if you’re still experiencing problems.

The Chemistry VPN service will be down until Tuesday.

Linuxfs network share maintenance tonight (Samba)

The Samba service will be upgraded on the linuxfs server tonight to correct connection problems with non-domain devices.  This maintenance will begin at 7:00 pm and last approximately one hour.  Please close any open file sharing connections to linuxfs before 7:00 pm to avoid data loss (or turn off your computer).  This update will not affect Linux workstations.
