WinFS Rebooted Last Night
The Windows File Server, WinFS, rebooted twice spontaneously last night. This is a significant anomaly indicating either file system corruption or hardware issues. We suspect hardware issues (this is good news, relatively speaking). An emergency maintenance window has been schedule for Sunday, 04/26 at 6pm to address this issue. Estimated down time is 1.5 hours- outages may be shorter or significantly longer depending on the results of our analysis. We will update this blog with information regarding status. If you have questions or concerns about this planned outage, please contact support at support@chemistry.ohio-state.edu
Outage During Maintenance Window- This Friday 03.20.09
Most of the IT infrastructure is going down for a firmware update this friday at 8:00PM until 12:00PM.This includes the windows file server, DNS, the departmental website, printing, software license servers, sharepoint, our trouble ticket system, and the terminal server. This represents the first site-wide outage of these services since our installation of the cluster about 6 months ago. Thank you,John Puskar
Mail is back up.
The server CHEMISTRY will be rebooted (cleanly) at 6pm. This should take under 20 minutes and will be a preventative measure to avoid similar issues tomorrow.
NOBACKUP space temporarily available
The NOBACKUP space is currently available at the server named ‘oldbackup’. To reach this server, perform the following steps:
- click ‘start’ then ‘run’.
- type ‘\oldbackup’ and press ‘ok’.
We will need to bring this space down at the end of the day for the next two days (about 6PM) to stabilize it. Please have your data saved and closed by 6PM.
Unfortunately, this is the best solution we can offer until our new SAN is installed.
Account Maintenance
During the remainder of the year we will be doing Windows account maintenance. This means:
- We are performing upgrades to the Windows file server.
- You should see no significant impact on services
- Increased user quotas. Free space increased on the existing, congested windows server.
- Graduate student accounts will be moved first. Faculty and staff will follow after the first of the year.
- You can assist us and help things go smoothly by logging out at the end of each day or when you are not using your Windows computer.
- If you receive an ‘Account Disabled’ notice please wait 15 minutes and try to log in again.
- If you see any significant impact or encounter issues with your windows account, please email support@chemistry.ohio-state.edu for assistance.
Nobackup Shares are Up!
The nobackup shares are back online.
NOBackup Space Outage
The chemistry nobackup space will be going down from 11:00AM until noon.
We are migrating the nobackup shares to another server to make room for a new backup system that we are testing for use in the department. This is happening outside of the regularly scheduled maintenance window due to the vendor’s availability for helping us install the new backup software.
As always, feel free to contact via any of the normal channels.
Thank you,

Friday maintenance window scheduled
There will be a computer support maintenance window this friday.
Friday, December 12th beginning at 6pm.
This window begins earlier than typical due to the length of time required to perform the associated work. Scheduled work includes foundational preparation for a new storage SAN for department file storage. Expect periodic and lengthy- possibly total– outages for up to 6 hours Friday evening. If you have questions about this maintenance work please email support@chemistry.ohio-state.edu
