My Experiences With Cultural Diversity

One aspect of my life that has changed over the past few months is my exposure to different cultures. The small town I grew up in was very heavily white, and although other cultures always fascinated me, I found it difficult to connect with them given the cultural background of my town. Nevertheless I tried to learn about these cultures through languages, what I consider to be the true gateway to culture, however The Ohio State University has provided a much better entry into cultural diversity than merely languages (but I do still love and heavily study languages). Talking to so many different people from so many different backgrounds has really broadened my perspective of the world, allowing me to learn about cultures from all over the world that I would’ve never encountered in my small town. In fact, two of my roommates are from an international school in China, and have been teaching me all about Chinese culture, along with teaching me the language. Through these new cultures, I believe I’ve become a more intelligent person, because I’ve learned about so many new ideas, ways of life, and traditions that it has allowed my mind to think more creatively and differently. I’ve also become a much more understanding person through this process, because if I can understand where somebody came from, then I will understand that person a lot better. Being surrounded by other cultures has made me a much more outgoing person as well, since my love for cultures has inclined me to talk to new people and ask them about their experiences. Overall, exposure to cultural diversity has had many positive benefits for me, and I’ve had so much fun learning about all of the different cultures in the world.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

To achieve global awareness over my four years at college, I plan to continue my passion for languages and learning other cultures. I currently have a minor in German, am studying Russian on my own, and plan to pursue another language in a year or two, so continuing with this trend will allow me to learn about other cultures and become globally aware.

As a prospective acoustic engineer, I’m very interested in sound equipment, so I plan to begin designing and building my own sound equipment to fulfill original inquiry. This will start during winter break where I plan to build my first microphone, and I hope to one day design and build original, unique microphones with certain characteristics that nobody else has tried before.

I’ve thought through my academic plan for my fours years at OSU very thoroughly, and I believe it will be extremely accurate to what will be my schedule each semester. Included within the schedule are many hard classes, such as top-level physics and engineering classes, at the honors level when possible, so I will be very academically challenged.

I hope to receive an internship in Germany for a sound company either junior or senior year, and this will indefinitely help me to develop myself as a leader. It will give me hands on experience to what I’ll want to be doing for the rest of my life, and will enable me to lead both myself and others in projects like these when I hopefully have a job similar to it.

I plan to use my musical abilities, along with the a capella group “Scarlet Fever,” which I’m a part of, to achieve service engagement. This can range from doing fundraising concerts, to going to hospitals to sing for kids, and I believe I will be able to make a change in the community through this.
