Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Global Awareness
Throughout my coursework in the history major, I plan to explore the history of many areas of the world.
I believe Americans should speak Spanish. As a result, I’m fulfilling my language requirements with Spanish. However, I plan to learn about many other cultures and regions throughout my time at OSU. I have a particular interest in Yiddish. I will learn about Yiddish language and culture over the next four years.
I am a member of the Collegiate Council on World Affairs (CCWA) because I find International Relations interesting. CCWA is a venue where I can discuss and learn more about current and past geopolitics. I plan to remain involved in CCWA during my time here.
Original Inquiry
I have plans for a cross-curricular research project which will hopefully culminate in an undergraduate thesis. I hope to use social science methodology to explain an aspect of cultural history. I’m involved with the Scarlet Historical Review, so I will engage with other undergraduates’ original historical writing. Through this, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the editing and publishing processes.
Academic Enrichment
I’m excited to explore history more deeply. My eventual goal is to be a professor of modern social and cultural history. I have enjoyed learning about and discussing history since I was young. I love reading primary sources. I’m minoring in Yiddish in the hopes that it will enrich my historical understanding. Additionally, I’m considering adding a second major in a social science, likely sociology or political science, to develop the analytical tools I will use in my future research.
While I am a majoring in the humanities, I will explore my interests in math and science as well. In high school, I enjoyed Calculus. I hope to use my Calculus skills in Physics.
Leadership Development
I enjoy teaching. I would like to be involved in tutoring in history, writing, or Calculus at some point during my time at OSU. I like the challenge of explaining a concept in different ways. I hope to use my skills to help other students at OSU.
Additionally, I would like to lead during OSUMUN, the Collegiate Council on World Affairs’ Model United Nations Conference for high school students. I participated in OSUMUN as a high school delegate, and my positive experience influenced my decision to attend OSU. I know personally how fun and impactful OSUMUN can be, and I look forward to the chance to continue to improve it.
Service Engagement
I am interested in helping migrants and refugees. While my course schedule this semester prevents me from being involved with the relevant student groups, I plan to get involved next semester.
I also enjoy volunteering for political campaigns as a canvasser. Canvassing is an easy way to determine the political leanings of an area. I see field work on campaigns as practical applications of political science concepts. I find it interesting to see whether residents reflect or contradict political trends.
Earlier this semester, I participated in Community Commitment Day and I enjoyed it. I plan to participate in future years.

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. About Me

I’m a history major from Bowling Green, OH. I hope to minor in Yiddish and add a second major in a social science, likely Political Science. My goal is to earn a PhD in History while focusing specifically on modern history with an emphasis on social history. I want to be a tenured history professor eventually.

My non-academic interests focus largely around music. I’m a huge fan of classic soul, early R’n’B, early rock ‘n’ roll, funk, and classic rock. I play many instruments, but some of my favorites are guitar and trombone.
