Artifacts

The Piave Club Academic Scholar award is an academic artifact of my senior year of high school. This award is given to one student-athlete annually as a symbol of high academic and athletic achievement. This award considers academic achievement, athletic achievement, and other activities performed during high school as well. This is such an honor as it is a strong symbol of academic and athletic achievement. I was the one recipient chosen out of all of applicants in the Columbus, Ohio area. I feel very honored to be able to present this one thousand dollar scholarship towards a higher education.

Year in Review

This past year I had the pleasure to be responsible for a few different activities at Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus, Ohio. These activities include becoming the varsity girl’s golf co-captain for a second year, a co-president for She’s The First club, and becoming treasurer and section leader for my choir. As varsity co-captain, I was in charge of notifying teammates of captain’s practices and initiating team bonding activities. Being responsible for these activities taught me how to communicate and plan reasonable and attainable activities on a budget. Furthermore, for the club my friend and I created in our high school, She’s The First Club, I planned and communicated meetings with our members. I also helped to plan fundraisers and worked with my co-president to raise money for the organization She’s The First. Through this club, I learned how to put hard efforts forth in the hopes of attaining a goal for a greater purpose and cause. I learned how to be a leader while still working with others. Lastly, as treasurer and section leader of my high school choir, I learned how to manage and record funds as well as lead and teach others in music in my section. As a leader, I learned the importance of respecting others in the pursuit of completing a specific task.

At Bishop Watterson High School, I also learned the importance of balancing schoolwork and my duties as a student with other activities as well. As my leadership activities required much time, I had to budget and plan time for my other activities and schoolwork as well. At Watterson, I was also involved in Business Club, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and theater performances in both the spring and fall. I learned the importance of prioritizing certain activities and schoolwork. This past year taught me that planning and working efficiently is the key to productivity.

G.O.A.L.S.

In my first year at The Ohio State University, I am actively involved in two organizations. The first is the Program for Advancing Scholarship and Service (PASS). PASS is a selective first-year academic learning community for students in the college of Arts and Sciences who have a shared interest in the academic, cultural, career, and community benefits of diversity. PASS relates to the Global Awareness, Academic Enrichment, and Service Engagement aspects of the Honors and Scholars G.O.A.L.S. Global Awareness is expressed through introductions to study abroad opportunities and exposure to information about diversity. Academic Enrichment is achieved through lessons about how to perform well academically, as well as exposure to services offered to Ohio State students. PASS students are achieve Service Engagement through volunteering time and efforts to the Ohio State and Columbus area community. The second organization is the Leadership and Service Academy. This is a student organization that promotes leadership through the planning and execution of service projects in the local area.

Future endeavors I would like to be apart of at The Ohio State University include those with a strong message and cause. Specifically, I would like to be apart of College Mentors for Kids. This is national organization that connects college students with children in need. This promotes Leadership Development through mentorship, as well as Service Engagement. I would also like to be apart of Make-A-Wish at Ohio State. This organization helps to raise funds in order to grant wishes for the Make-A-Wish foundation. This organization is also a meaningful way to relate to Service Engagement as an Honors and Scholars student.

Career

Recently, I was selected for participation in the 2017 Propel Ohio Collegiate Leadership Summit held on November 17th, 2017. This event is a leadership program that promotes civic engagement and inspires undergraduate students to grow into civic leaders in Ohio. Propel Ohio features a one-day statewide conference in the fall and 5 Propel Ohio Regional Gatherings in the winter and spring. Propel Ohio 2017 engaged college students with issues including childhood poverty, food security, inequities in education, and homelessness. The speakers at this event communicated crucial and inspiring information about childhood poverty, as well as other public problems. As a pre-law student, I hope to be able to change and help these people need.

Artifacts

One artifact in my academic career is the National Honor Society (NHS) ceremony. The National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Membership in the National Honor Society is very special to me. This is a huge honor that I share with my older brother and friends as well. This is a tremendous display of academic achievement.

About Me

Alex Bryant is a first year student in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University, where she is a Politics, Society, and Law Scholar.  A recent graduate from Bishop Watterson High School, Alex spends most of her free time thinking about civil rights and how to improve the lives of others.  At Bishop Watterson, Alex took part in many extracurricular activities.  She was captain of girl’s varsity golf, earned four varsity letters, and was cast in school theater productions all four years.  Other activities included service based clubs such as the Saint Vincent DePaul Society and Business Club.  Besides raising funds for the poor, tutoring children, and making sandwiches for the homeless, Alex raised funds for the burn unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.  Lastly at Bishop Watterson, Alex created a service based club to donate to the organization She’s The First to help low income girls from underprivileged countries become the first in their family to attend school.  Alex was also in the National Honor Society and the National Business Honor Society.  Alex is looking forward to the next four years as an Ohio State Buckeye and is excited to see what opportunities it holds!
