Global Awareness: One of the ways in which I plan on working towards the goal of Global Awareness is by pursuing a minor in Arabic. To achieve this, I not only have to take language classes, but also classes on Arabic and Middle Eastern/North African culture. I have already studied abroad. In conjunction with my Arabic minor, I feel that studying abroad helped me to become more globally aware. I was able to interact with foreigners and understand their opinions on America and the rest of the world. Some of these views were similar to mine, but some were also vastly different.
Original Inquiry: During my time at Ohio State, I plan on being involved in research. One of my majors is Psychology, which makes many research opportunities available to me. Due to my being in the Honors program and being a Psychology major, I was able to apply for and successfully become a part of the Honors Research Mentorship Program. This program paired me with a professor/doctor of psychology and would allow me to see how professional research is conducted from a “hands-on” point of view. This program is currently allowing me to finish my Honors Thesis a year early.
Academic Enrichment: I chose my majors (Psychology and International Studies: Security and Intelligence) and minor (Arabic) with intention of eventually being hired by the CIA. I specifically chose courses within my majors that I believe best set me up to achieve this goal. For example, I selected International Studies 3700, Introduction to Intelligence, and International Studies 4700, Terror and Terrorism. These courses both dealt specifically with issues and concepts that are imperative for me to understand if I want to be hired by the CIA.
Leadership Development: To better my leadership skills, I plan on becoming involved in student organizations and research. I just recently made the Ultimate Frisbee team at Ohio State and was elected captain for the second year in a row within that organization/team. Furthermore, I plan to participate in more research besides just the Research Mentorship Program that was mentioned before. Before I leave Ohio State, I hope to be participating in research that I have specifically designed. Further, I hope this research eventually becomes published.
Service Engagement: I plan to participate in service on the Ultimate Frisbee team. One of the ways that we engage in service, is by lofting the beds on campus. Over the course of the year, we also do other forms of service. I would also like to explore service opportunities within certain Christian organizations on campus. I am Catholic and I have done service within my Church community before and I would like to explore similar options within the Ohio State Catholic Community.
