Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

In order to develop my knowledge and appreciation of other cultures, I plan to take classes that are centered around other countries or civilizations and how they relate to my own in order to draw differences and similarities.  For example, I am going to take an art history class surrounding Renaissance to present art in Europe and the United States.  I would also like to study abroad in my time at Ohio State and am very interested in any programs for chemistry or earth science.  This experience would allow me to live and learn in another country in order to observe their culture along with continuing my current programs of study.

In my years at Ohio State, I plan to participate in research in the field of biochemistry or earth science.  Working in one of these labs would help me to learn about original inquiry where I could help to carry out the research of instructors while learning how to come up with meaningful research of my own.  I hope to participate in research with an academic program at the Stone Lab where I would learn research techniques and gain insight on what researching as a career would be like.

To increase my academic enrichment, I chose biochemistry as a major because I wanted to pick a major that would challenge me and hold my interest while allowing me to continue my education in the area that I always enjoyed most.  I also plan to major in earth science with a focus on environmental studies because I have a love for the subject material and would like to have continued instruction on these topics.  I am also very excited about the general education requirements in the areas of visual art and history because they are two areas that I have a love for and want to continue learning about even though they don’t directly apply to my chosen major.

In order to foster my leadership skills, I plan to participate in student organizations where I will have the opportunity to lead or help organize events and projects.  I also hope to start research at the university soon so that I can continue with the project and be a leader in the lab by the end of my time at Ohio State.  Finally, I work over the breaks and hope to also get an internship to continue my education and leadership development.

Service engagement is a very important area that I plan to continue my participation in.  I hope to join a student organization that focuses on service around the Columbus area so that I can be an active member and helper in my new community.  I also hope to join a club that focuses on fundraising with the intentions of taking a service trip at the end of the school year to a country that needs aid.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

Hello, my name is Lainie Boyle.  I’m a first year at the Ohio State University in the honors program with and intended major of biochemistry.   I was born and raised in Park City, Utah and made the decision to leave home right after high school in order to force myself into having new experiences.  I have been a dedicated student since I was young as I have always been excited by reading and learning new things.  In high school I pushed myself by taking classes that would challenge me and help me to be more prepared for a college course experience.  My career goals are still rapidly changing as I am intrigued by a new subject daily and try to explore the area where I would enjoy dedicating a long period of time to.  My hopes for my experience at OSU include participating in new and interesting courses and research opportunities to be exposed to different subject matter that may incite a passion in a more specific region of the sciences.  My uncertainty on what career I may want to pursue make me all the more excited to begin my work at OSU.
