Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

What have you done so far to develop you Global Awareness?  How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal?

I have gained a stronger connection and understanding to different cultures around the world since arriving at The Ohio State.  I have joined programs, such as Phi Delta Epsilon and a CPR internship, which injects me into various communities with cultures different than mine.  It is fascinating to learn all about the people who I share a community with, as well as those all over the globe.  I went on a mission trip to Nairobi, Kenya last summer and it was an eye-opening experience.  It was humbling to learn the Kenyan cultures and beliefs and encouraged me to increase my global awareness.  I plan to continue by getting involved in more programs, as well as continuing to do mission trips around the world.

What experiences have you had so far that have helped you to understand the research or creative process?  How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal?

I have taken multiple science classes that focus on effective and efficient research, such as Biology 1113, 1114, and 3401.  I have taken other classes that focus on creativity through designs and performances, such as Theatre 2100H.  I have worked in my father’s IVF lab over multiple summers and I am currently working on sperm DNA fragmentation research with an embryologist.  I have developed an appreciation for research with a scientific perspective.  I will continue to work toward this goal by obtaining a research position on campus.  I am currently in progress of joining a research lab.

How does you Honors Contract demonstrate a commitment to the goal of Academic Enrichment? How does you planned curriculum relate to your future aspiration?

Completing this contract demonstrates a commitment to excel in my academics, because it is a planned guide of my academic career.  It provides the foundation of my education and allows for a better developed plan on extracurricular opportunities to further my education.  It aids my future aspirations, because I planned my schedule around my career goals, because I am taking classes that are beneficial for the MCAT and I planned my schedule to be most effective in doing so.  I chose my major and minor, because I am interested in medical school and biology and public health are two aspects of science that I find very interesting and important to my values. I chose GEs that I believe would benefit my college experience, instead of doing them for a credit.  For example, I am taking Theatre 2100H because I have a history doing theatre and it is something I find interesting and fun.

With which activities are you involved? How does your involvement contribute to your development as a leader? How does your involvement relate to your personal and/or career goals?

I am involved in various activities on and off campus.  I am a member of Phi Delta Epsilon, an intern for the Wexner CPR program, and a volunteer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH).  I believe that all of these involvements contribute to my development of being a leader.  I am in a very independent role at the children’s hospital, where I tend to needs of the patients and their parents each week.  The CPR internship has developed my skills as a leader to give a presentation and demonstration about CPR to various groups in the community.  It has allowed for me to step up and teach those who are willing to learn about saving a life.  My medical fraternity has provided internal leadership positions and activities that I enjoy doing.  All of these activities are areas that I am very passionate in and further my OSU experience.  I am intrigued in most medical orientated programs and groups and would love to get involved with all that I can.

List the service-orientated activities with which you have been involved.  How do you plan to continue to engage with the community?

Phi Delta Epsilon, CPR internship, and volunteering at NCH are all strongly service orientated.  Our philanthropy at Phi Delta Epsilon is for the Children’s Miracle Network.  We set up various programs and events to raise money for their cause.  Our fraternity has donated over $1 million dollars to Children’s Miracle Network since they have become our philanthropy.  The CPR internship focuses on providing knowledge about hands-only CPR to as many people as possible.  We take time out of our days to go all around the community and give a free presentation and training to those who want it.  Volunteering at the NCH is something I am passionate about, because I want to help these children in their time of need by making them as comfy and happy as I possibly can.  I plan to continue with all of these commitments, as well as find more service-based programs here at OSU.
