I learned a lot in this course, one of the focuses of learning was on communicating and collaborating on the web, it focused on the teacher and or instructor. This is just as important as communication between people in real life. You also treat people the same as you do online as you do in person. The word for this is netiquette, or a set of standards on how to communicate with individuals online like in discussion board posts, blogs, and other things of that sort. With that being said there is a line where too much information, like personal information no one should really know online. Or a question that has a long answer that’s too much for the discussion/blog. One of the most important things with online communication involves emailing the instructor. When communicating with your classmates the way you respond or begin conversations will be different because they are your peers. A teacher is above you so trying to avoid slang or asking for a demand is very disrespectful. Also beginning the email with Dear, (insert teachers last name) and ending the email with something like, thank you for your time( insert your name) makes the email more formal and less like a message between peers. Another modules focus was on studying and making sure it’s the right kind of studying. Like when the teacher has a PowerPoint and there are a lot of slides you do not have to copy down everything on the slide but the things that are important like the main ideas and a few of the other details. Another source of note taking can come from a program called OneNote which is one of the best sources out there in my opinion and it organizes your material like a file cabinet. When watching a video or a podcast you can re watch important parts of the video or audio, and pause it if you can’t go as fast as the person is talking. Podcasts and videos are also really good when it comes to getting another person’s view on the topic even if you may not agree with it, it will widen your views on the subject. The last topic that we did was on researching for information on a topic. This is one of the most time consuming parts of the writing process. We have an online campus library which is extremely useful as well as the regular physical library. The most important thing though is to cite your sources which from these lectures. This is even more severe than I thought if you do not cite. This can get you punished, put on academic probation and even kicked out of school. One of the most popular sources to use us Wikipedia, and there is nothing wrong with using it as long as you don’t quote it as a real source like you would for a book or an article in your paper. You can use it for background information or to get an overall view of the subject or little things that you need to learn about your topic, but not full sentences or paragraphs. Through this course I learned that I knew a lot of these things already, but it just widens my views on the topics. I have been applying these things already so I will just continue to do so.

module 6
In module 6 the focus was on researching and searching. This is part of the learning process and it takes time. When writing an academic paper it is important to look for things that are specific to your topic. There is an online campus library as well as the physical library to help locate the information you need. The source can be considered good if it is reliable, meaning that the information is up to date, it is not bias, and it is well written. Also if it is a good source it will definitely be cited which is something that has to be done when using a source on a paper. Once the source is found it is extremely Important to cite the source. Depending on the class you take the formatting of the citation will differ. There is MLA and APA, the two aren’t that much different but the differences are what separate them into the different type of paper that is being written. If the sources are not cited, you can be accused of plagiarism, which can get you punished and possibly kicked out of school. A popular source people use is Wikipedia, and there is nothing wrong with using it as long as you don’t really use it as a real source in your paper, you can use it for background information and little things that you need to learn about your topic, but not full sentences or paragraphs.
Module 5 blog post
This module focus was on studying and making sure you study the right way. Like when the teacher has a powerpoint and there are a lot of slides it is important to not copy down everything on the slide but the things that are important like the main ideas and a few of the other details. To help take notes there are three laid out designs, one of them is the Cornell method which involves dividing the paper in sections so you can write down your important facts on the topic, as well as the instructor’s. Another source of note taking can come from a program called OneNote which organizes your material like a file cabinet. When watching a video or a podcast it is important to re watch important parts of the video or audio, and pause it if you can’t go as fast as the person is talking. Podcasts and videos are also really good when it comes to getting another person’s view on the topic. You may learn different things or look at things a different way when persuaded by a different person, you’ll get a interesting looks that you may or may not disagree with, but it is always good to see things from different perspectives to widen the thought process.
Educational video
The video was about the difference between actuarial science and finance science since people get them confused a lot. Actuarial science is dealing with risk and percentages and statistics. While finance science actually deals with the people in the businesses and the money upfront. That means banks and hedge fund managers.
This enhanced what my knowledge because I did not know the difference between the two, I always thought they did pretty much the same thing. I did know for sure what an Actuary did but it just gave me more information.
Module post
In module 3 the focus of learning is on communicating and collaborating on the web, mainly with classmates and the teacher. This is just as important as communication between people in real life, but it is just on the web. You also treat people the same as you do online as you do in person. Online it is called netiquette or a set of standards related to how individuals communicate with each other online like in discussion board posts, blogs, and other things of that sort. With that being said there is a line where too much information, something personal or a question requiring a long answer is too much for the discussion/blog and an email or phone call is needed. One of the most important things when communicating online involves emailing the instructor. When communicating with your classmates the way you respond or begin conversations will be different because they are your peers. A teacher is your superior so trying to avoid slang or demands is very important. Also beginning the email with Dear, (insert teachers last name) and ending the email with something like, thank you( insert your name) makes the email more formal and less like a message between peers. The same goes for blogging and responding with your instructor.
When dealing with group projects approach it the same way you would if you knew the people in real life. Make sure the work is split evenly and everyone does the work and is giving everyone updates on how much progress you have made. But do it all in a polite way as to anger or offend anyone.
