Vacation Blog 3

Easily one of my most memorable vacations was last year, to Orlando Florida and Walt Disney World. I had just moved back to Ohio and was at home talking with my best friends sister at about 10PM on a Wednesday. I still had about a week before I had to be back at work, and she was taking a sabbatical. She told me that she was considering going to her Grandparents condo in Orlando for a mini vacation. She was on the fence about it all, wasn’t sure how long she’d be there or who she’d go with, when I suggested, “If you leave tonight, I’m coming with you.”

Within the hour she, her two younger brothers, and I were packed and loaded into the car. The complete spontaneity of the entire adventure made it one of the most memorable experiences ever. This trip was full of “first times” for me. Not only was it my first time in Florida but it was my first time visiting Walt Disney, of which I am a true fanatic, and the first time we saved someones life (A story for another time).

After driving 24hours straight, We finally made it to sunny Florida. The next seven days were spent full of laughter, a bit of arguing and loads of sunshine. The beaches, the Magic Kingdom, and the downtown life of Orlando was a dream come true. The best part of it all was that we had no plans. We had no responsibility, nowhere to be, and we were surrounded by good people. We just did whatever we could think of and I couldn’t have wished for any other adventure.

Blog 2 Current Event

Hello All,

I found this article on Independent that talks about an attempted hijacking on a Russian Aeroflot flight five days ago. The plane was forced down into an emergency landing as a passenger, supposedly intoxicated, attempted to break into the cockpit, demanding that the plane change course. No doubt this all happened within a matter of minutes, and the effective communication between crew members, air traffic control and ground forces was a key factor to quickly solving this issue. The company made quick to note that all its personnel are thoroughly trained in order to handle situations like these and ensured the safety of it’s members. Thankfully, no person was injured or harmed in the event.  By the time the plane made its emergency landing, police and emergency ground teams were on stand by. This event shines a light on the effect of useful communication. A potential hijacking is certainly no joke and it was essential that the captain, first officer and all the assistants on the aircraft quickly and effectively deterred the man who was causing a scene. In situations like these, decisions must be made within a snap of a second and delegated tasks must be made clear to everyone. I’d say this is a great example of practical, effective and useful aviation communication.

Thank you,

Artiom K.

Klimenko Intro Blog 1

It was easy for me to choose the aviation major at Ohio State because this is not my first attempt at pursuing something I’m passionate about. By now, I’ve come to understand what drives me and I do whatever I can to keep pushing forward. The power of flight offers infinite possibilities not only financially but also in the way that it can literally take you places you’ve never been before. Even now, when I look up to the sky, my imagination lifts me into the clouds. I remember when I was a kid we lived close enough to the water to where, when the air show was in town, I’d be woken up by passing Blue Angels. As soon as I’d hear them I’d shoot towards the window and then outside just to catch a glimpse.

With my degree I do intend to fly, but first hope to land a career working for Air Traffic Control, or some sort of aviation management role. The mastery of this field is something I intend to achieve and the security this field offers, to me, is more valuable than the expense of piloting as a student. Overall, everyday as I continue this journey, I boil at the thought of what my future in this field offers. For now, as has been in the past, I’ll continue to drive myself onward in hopes of achieving something great.

Thank you,

AK

The main context  here are the people who work for delta, especially the pilots, flight crew, and flight dispatchers. They are the most important people and have interest in passengers because they want passengers to keep flying with delta. At the same time they have little power in changing the airline

The subjects in the situation are definitely people like businessman who fly all the time. People who are frequent flyers want the quickest and easiest route from point A to point B, and this social media post gives Delta the right to say they can do this. Vacationers are also subjects because they fly for their vacation and want a great airline.

The crowd would be people who do not fly because they have little interest in airlines and even less interest in who is the best airline. People who are scared to fly fall into this category to because they will not even pay attention to airline news.

Players are the higher-ups in the airport because they have the most power in changing the airline and a lot of interest in what others think of their airline. Delta being the best airline will bring paying customers, and that is important to the higher-ups.

Players:

The most prominent player in this situation is Delta Airlines itself. They have the highest interest as well as power in the situation and value their reputation/how they are being portrayed on social media to a very high extent. This negative feedback could look really bad for them so they have a very high interest in the scenario as well as the power to fix the situation and make themselves look better. In addition to Delta Airlines, I would put the passenger/ composer of the tweet on the line between players a subjects, as not only did they have enough interest in sharing their complaint on an enormous platform, they also have the power to give Delta a bad reputation, potentially causing them to make changes.

Subjects:

As previously mentioned, I would consider the airline passengers to be on the line in between players and subjects seeing as they have enough interest in sharing their complaint on an enormous platform, they also have the power to give Delta a bad reputation, potentially causing them to make changes. However, the passengers do not have enough power to make any changes on their own, which is why I would consider them subjects as well. Another party that may also be considered a subject might be other airlines. Other airline companies may be very interested in seeing what Delta may be doing wrong in order to make sure that they aren’t making the same mistakes, but don’t have any power in changing anything that Delta may or may not do.

Crowd:

In this situation, the crowd would be social media users who may solely stumble upon this tweet while scrolling through Twitter. They don’t have a whole lot of interest on the subject seeing as they may or may not be Delta customers, and the incident didn’t involve them, and they don’t have any power whatsoever in making any changes to the company and/or situation.

Context setters:

The context setters in this situation may include social media users who may have also had a bad experience with Delta and want to bring any bad situation to light. Depending on how determined they are they may not have a ton of interest, but they do have a higher amount of power due to the fact that they could bring their own issues to light on social media and retweet/reblog others’ bad experiences as well, giving Delta a bad reputation.

Players: The players in this situation are United Airlines, and their pilots. They both have in the power because they both have the ability to cancel flights. Pilots may refuse to fly in the Chicago area due to dangers associated with the winter weather, and United Airlines may cancel flights for the same reason. They both have interest in the situation because regardless of the outcome of the situation, both parties will be affected.

Subjects: The subjects would be the passengers of United Airlines because cancelled flights have a substantial affect on their travel schedules, but they have little control over what impact the winter weather will have on them.

Crowd: The crowd would be the passengers of other airlines. The passengers of other airlines have little power on United Airlines flights. They have a small amount of interest if United Airlines flights are cancelled because that may mean all other flights in Chicago are affected.

Context Setters: The context setters are the airport workers that have control of airport operations and whether the airport is open due to possible snow accumulation, but they do not have as much interest in the outcome as United Airlines or its passengers.

In short summary, American Airlines recently announced the delivery of their first Airbus A321 Neo – the newest plane in their current fleet. This information was posted via Twitter from the official American Airlines corporate Twitter account.

Players: The players in reference to this media would be American Airlines’ company corporate. American Airlines has both a high interest and power in this situation in that they now have the ability to fill a niche market with this aircraft and utilize its efficiency to maximize their profits from flights. On top of this, American can use the humor in this announcement to garner news attention and generate excitement for their new aircraft, and hopefully market it enough to convince potential passengers to fly with them.

Context setters: In this scenario, the context setters would be the crew of the new A321, and anyone involved in its operation. Given that pilots, ground crew, etc., aren’t usually directly involved in the financial aspects of a large company such as American, they would not have much interest in the marketing of a new aircraft. However, they are the ones that are directly responsible for its operation. Therefore, they would have some of the most power in this scenario with a lesser interest than American corporate. Another context setter would be Airbus – closer to a player. This is because while Airbus is the direct supplier of the new aircraft and has full control on its delivery, American Airlines is not their only customer and wouldn’t take their absolute full interest. But it is still good publicity for Airbus and is worth noting for them.

Subjects: The subjects in the case of this media would be any potential passengers looking to book a flight. As they are looking for an airline to schedule a flight with, passengers often take many things into account and look for the best experience. With American’s announcement of their new A321, they hope to spark interest with these potential customers and make them seem like the best airline to fly with. To a smaller extent, any competing airlines can be considered subjects as well; they would be interested in what their competition is doing and how the market is looking but have no power over what American Airlines does.

Crowd: The crowd in this situation would be the general, non-flying public. If the news of American’s A321 Neo gained enough buzz, it would certainly reach a significant portion of the population. Most of the people in the country, however, are not likely currently planning flights. Therefore, while the media would reach them, they would have little interest in it and no power to change anything related to it.

Players: The player(s) in regards to this post would be Southwest Airlines. Southwest airlines, in this case, has the highest interest and the highest power in determining if they will add service to Hawaii and make their service available to the public. The Southwest employees that will make this happen in the airplane, such as the pilots and flight attendant crew, will also have high power and high interest in that they will be ultimately responsible for the safe conduction of the flight.

Subjects: The subjects in this case would be the customers that would be planning on traveling to Hawaii by using Southwest Airlines, as they would have high interest in the service. Frequent flyers with Southwest who may have a lot of Rapid Rewards points who haven’t yet been to Hawaii would have especially high interest, as those Rapid Rewards are obviously only usable on Southwest. Additionally, other low cost carriers who don’t offer service to Hawaii, such as Spirit Airlines for example, would take high interest in this service and how well it does to determine if they too should commence service to Hawaii to compete with Southwest.

Crowd: The crowd in this case would be people who may be interested in going to Hawaii but would not be interested in using Southwest, or people not interested in going to Hawaii at all. This could be because of preference towards another airline, or because of the “crowd’s” preference to not fly at all. Additionally, the crowd could be all of the other airlines who already offer service to Hawaii. This would be of low interest to them as they have already established Hawaii routes, and Southwest would be the ones competing them at first until they establish a large presence in the lower 48 to Hawaii market.

Context Setters: The context setters in this case would be the FAA as they have high power in determining if Southwest can legally operate these Hawaii routes. The FAA must certify that Southwest can operate these routes safely, as Southwest would seek to prove through a series of “proving flights” showing the FAA that their aircraft conform to ETOPS standards and are capable of safely completing the flights (Southwest have just recently completed their first proving flight between Oakland and Honolulu).

Players: The players would e Delta airlines. They are the ones with launching the new aircraft and the ones opening new possibilities with the Airbus A220. Another player would be the maintenance crews that service the aircraft, having a new air-frame to learn on with potentially more reliable, easier to work on parts will benefit them.

Subjects: The subjects of this post are the passengers as they are going to be flying with the new aircraft. The aircraft will be more luxurious and convenient for the pilots.

Crowd: The crowd in this case will be the general public, they will be seeing a more common use of an airbus aircraft. As well as the other airlines that will be watching how the aircraft performs and the public’s opinion of it.

Context setters: These will be the regional airlines. They are the ones that will be running the aircraft and training the crews for the operations. And they will have the power over the actual operations of the aircraft.

Players: The players would be British Airways and the new cities. Both the airline and the cities with the new routes have high interest in how well the new schedule will perform in terms of passengers traveled and revenue. In terms of power BA has the final say in if a new route continues to be served. In terms of the new cities they share in the final say of the power to continue or cut off routes with the airline.

Subjects: The subjects of British Airways new summer 2019 routes are the prospective new customers. Prospective new customers going to and from the new locations have major interest in the new schedule. As the target audience of the airline they have the major interest in the unveiling of the new schedule and routes as it pertains to where they are, and where they want to go.

Crowd: The crowd for the new British Airways is the general public and other airlines. The general public may have moderate interest in the new routes but if they have enough interest to buy tickets they become consumers, and regardless of interest they have little power in affecting the routes. Likewise, other airlines have moderate interest in the outcome of the new routes, but again have no power over them.

Context Setters: The context setters are the workers of British Airways, primarily the pilots, flight attendants, and dispatchers. While these people have interest in the new route as new opportunities they do not hold the same interest in the outcome as they are just more routes being added. These stockholders do have power with the routes however, as those who are working the routes they directly have power in the outcome of how well they are carried out.
