Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas. She opposed traditional stereotypical gender roles since she was a kid. She played basketball and football. She also enjoyed catching frogs and bugs. Amelia went to Ogontz School located in Pennsylvania after graduating high school but then started working for Red Cross as nurse’s aid in Toronto, Canada during World War I. She moved back to the United States after the war and went to Columbia University located in New York to study medicine. Amelia and her father went to see the air show in California, and she rode a plane for the first time. She realized “this is what I have to do”. She begins flight training at the beginning of the year of 1921. Amelia worked really hard to pay for the training costs, and also got her own airplane and named “the Canvy”.

Amelia has many aviation records. In 1922, she converted the first female pilot to fly solo above 14,000 ft. ten years later, she became the first women to fly over the Atlantic Ocean by solo and was awarded for “heroism or remarkable accomplishment while engaging in an aerial flight”. She also became the first women to fly solo across the U.S. without any stops, and solo flight to the U.S. region from Hawaii. In addition, Amelia was the first administrator of the Ninety-Nines (global alignment) of licensed pilots, which now symbolizes female pilots from 44 nations.

On June 1, 1937, Amelia and her navigator took off from Miami to become the first woman to fly around the world. All the flight went well until July 2. They departed from Lae Papua New Guinea to get to Howland Island, which is located on the Pacific Ocean, yet they disappeared during the flight. The U.S. government called for 4 million dollars to search them, however, they still do not where they crashed. Many investigators are considering that they did not have enough fuel.

Players: Delta Airlines would be the players because they have the highest interest in how customers are feeling about them. Moreover, they have the most power to change or react to it.

Context Setters: Flight attendants, ground crews, pilots would be in this category, but with a higher interest because they were the ones who were actually communicating and making the service dog get off the plane. They probably have some interest, since it would be important for them to know if that decision was right or not.

Subjects: The disabled man and other passengers would be subjects because the disabled man was treated very poorly, and they all have high interest in how Delta Airlines is going to react to this. They may also have some power to make changes by posting claims on social media.

Crowd: The crowd would be other airlines, people who don’t use Delta Airlines and or people who don’t ride an airplane that often. It is because this post does not affect them much.

The most favorite trip was visiting Thailand with my family in 2010. Thailand is located in South East Asia, and there are three seasons: hot season, cool season and rainy season. I was so excited about this trip because I used to live in Bangkok (the capital) when I was in kindergarten so basically, this was my second visit, and I just missed the food, culture, shops, weather, ocean and everything there. After arriving at the airport in Bangkok from Tokyo, we directly went to Phi Phi Island by ferry which was about 45 minutes ride and stayed there for five days. The ocean was as clear as a crystal, and we could see the bottom of it, and the view is so gorgeous I would say it is the Asian version of Hawaii. I enjoyed swimming in the ocean and seeing pretty fishes passing by us all day. When you drop a piece of bread in the ocean, fishes will come to you for more and that was a valuable experience for me. What made the stay in Phi Phi Island more special was that it was my birthday week. The hotel invited us to a pretty table on the beach on my birthday and served a special full course dinner and a birthday cake for us. The course menu was mainly Thai food and eating delicious foods and watching the sunset at the same time was a perfect combination. I loved it and had a blast time, yet this was not the end. When we went back to our room, my bed was decorated with flowers and green leaves! I was not expecting this at all!

We took a ferry back to Bangkok the next day and stayed there for three days. My sister’s friend and his family were also visiting Bangkok while we were there, so we met up with them and went around the local shops in town on the first day. These shops were still the same, but the city has grown rapidly and became so convenient in less than ten years. I had never seen a subway running in Bangkok before and I was so happy to see this city growing, thus at the same time, I felt kind of sad not seeing the same buildings around where we used to live. On the second day, my dad’s friend and his family invited us to their house for dinner and made new friends there. On the last day in Thailand, we went to the food stall and ate as much Thai food as we can. I would definitely go back to Thailand again and make new memories there sometimes soon.

According to AIR Wise, NATS ( the UK air traffic management company) is putting AI (Artificial Intelligence) to a test at Heathrow Airport on London. It is to help recoverability loss due to poor visibility. They are utilizing both AI technology and high description photographic equipment at NAT’S Digital Tower Laboratory at Heathrow to do an experiment, whether they can make the airport’s landing ability better when the visibility is very low.

Heathrow control tower is over 280 feet tall and one can see the airport in plain sight, however, it also makes it difficult for them to see outside when the clouds are very low. Air traffic controllers check if the airplane has landed and the runway is clear for the next airplane to land, by using ground radar when the visibility is low. Using a ground radar takes more time, and this will lead to delays of many flights.

NATS assumes that introducing AI technology will solve this problem because an AI platform can clarify the images and send information about each airplane to the air traffic controllers, including when an airplane has cleared the runway (AIR Wise, 2019).

I think relying everything on AI in the aviation industry would not be a good idea, because there are some things which cannot be done by AI, such as making decisions when there is an emergency. When there is an irregular problem during the flight, AI would not be able to make the best decision because AI’s knowledge is based on data. However, I think using AI as a tool will allow air traffic controllers to communicate with pilots more effectively. They will probably have extra time to reconfirm the instructions they will be given to pilots, and the instructions would be more accurate. It will then give pilots a sense of safety. Most of all, it will gradually decrease the number of accidents.

Blog 1 Mao Yoshida

Hi! My name is Mao Yoshida, and I am a one-year exchange student from Japan. I am majoring intercultural communication back in Japan, but I am thinking about changing my major to aviation soon.

I was always interested and has always been my dream to work in the aviation field since I was a kid. My family and I have been moving to different countries, and traveling a lot, and would ride an airplane at least once every two or three months, so riding an airplane is like part of my life. I also love how we can see the world from the sky when we look outside from the airplane; it’s amazing to see how different countries are all on one big planet.  These two experiences are probably the reason why I got interested in this field.

When you major intercultural communication in Japan, you can get a job in almost any field. Therefore, even though my major is not aviation, I can still get a job through this major and I was thinking about graduating by majoring intercultural communication. However, I saw OSU in the exchange program list and found out that there are aviation courses here. This was when I decided to apply for Ohio State University and take aviation course to gain some knowledge. In addition to that, I also decided to get a private pilot license here in Ohio and I am working on that right now. It will make me easier to get an aviation job in Japan.

I am not 100% sure what I want to do in the future yet, but I am thinking about applying to airline companies and become a pilot after studying for four years at the university in Japan. I want to connect many people from different countries by face-to-face, and want many of them to experience how fun it is to visit, interact and learn about other cultures.
