German Village

Have you guys visited German Village in Columbus?

Here is the link of website that you can find brief information (and location!) on this place: http://germanvillage.com/

I have never been this place as I’m having crazy class schedule for this is semester. However, I’ve heard lots of good feedback from people who visited this place.

German village originally established as immigrants from Germany gathered and lived together in this particular area in Columbus. Now this village is famous for German style sausage and beer (German beer!!!!). If you are interested in visiting some exotic place in Columbus and enjoy quality European beer, it might be a good idea to visit this pace and enjoy your weekend.

Hopely, I will  be able to visit here before I finish my degree program…!!

Free flu shots!

Although I do not have a TV and do not read local news, I do aware of the Evola, the pandemic virus that has 70 percent or higher mortality rate.  The flu shot does not prevent us from being infected to Evola virus. However, it, at least, keeps us from getting flu during winter season.

Any OSU student with comprehensive health care plan can get a free flu at at the second floor of RPAC, on this Thursday and next Monday! check out the details from the website of student health center and get free shots if you want to!

Brainstorming for the research paper

Brainstorming for the Research Paper

In the  progress, as of 10/14/14

List of possible topics for Research paper

I will probably intensify the literature review works on the research collaboration. Here are my developing thought on the research paper.

Research questions

: How do the R&D cooperation and technological learning take place in environmental and energy technology industry?

i)              Who participate and why?

ii)             What is the mechanism for inter-organizational interactions behind R&D cooperation?

Goals of literature review

: enhance my understanding on the research collaboration and technological learning in terms of interorganizational cooperation

Main stream of literatures regarding topic

: Boundary Organization, Boundary spanning, inter-organizational networks

There are the project that I’m working on for my one of doctoral seminar. I would like to link this project and research paper assignment so that I can fully focus on my paper during this semester. My doctoral seminar requires me to wright intensified annotated bibliography on the field of my research interest. I will try to use it to work on the literature review. If I work on this way, it might be a pretty serious work.

Digital story

well… I do remember and worry about making my digital story. I hate to say it, but I have not started it, yet.

I’m thinking of making the digital story as an anecdote on what has brought me here to pursue a doctorate degree.

Starting from story of my family, I’m thinking of delivering my academic journey through out big events in my life. If possible, I would like to use my own photos to make the video. I should talk about it with my sister or family to send or scan some of pictures from the past.

I started feeling pressure on making the digital story as I do not have digital editing skill. Lack of time is alsoa   big issue for me to work on this project. Since I’m taking 13 credit, auditing 3 credit, and doing RA work for my first year in Ph.D.  program, I do have an on-going issue in terms of managing time efficiently.

Leaves are turning yellow..

Time flies…

It’s been  more than a month since the school started a new academic year!

Today, I took a short walk between the classes and noticed that trees and leaves are turning yellow!

Watching the leaves falling from trees, I was surprised for the fact that I did not have time to look around and feel the how the season has been changed. I wish I have some extra hours to enjoy this beautiful season at the outside of school. But it seems like I do not have enough time for this little fun, since I hardly get sleep due to massive amount of reading and works.

I wish I can have just one day off that are free from any school works nor readings. Sadly, it seems like the Winter break is the only time I can actually get relaxed and rest during my first doctorate program.

about getting a driver’s licence in the Ohio State

I have to tell that public transportation system in America is neither convenient nor efficient in terms of meeting the need of end-users. If you live near by the campus, it might be much easy for you to take advantages of COTA bust system. If you live off-campus, however, you might want to consider to purchase your own vehicle and they get a driver’s license.

One thing I do not understand about the vehicle law in the Ohio state is that street level officials do not take an international driver’s licence as a legal license. Technically, it is legal for the first year when they become residents in this state. But if you are going to live in the city for certain period of time, then you must get a local license within a year. What I do not understand about this regulation is that they do not give a grace period to make a transition from the international licence to the local one. Rather, they usually charge any drivers, even the visitors coming from the other states, with international license as criminals, the non-licensed driver.

For international students, it is tough to get a driver’s license right after they come to America due to the time limits. At the same time, it is really tough to live without a car here. I guess every body would agree on it. So, most of student with international driver’s license end up purchasing a car first and then  getting local license later on. It is the system that make people to be non-license driver while they do have a legal license.

It is quite common that fairly large numbers of states in America accept the international license as a legal and official license and transfer it into a local license. It is because the United State of America is under the Geneva treaty that provides reciprocal benefits to U.S. citizen when they visit and live in the foreign country . The Ohio State unfortunately does not take this universal treaty. There should be amendment on this legal system in order to have more respects on people with international license.

Some useful information on a research data base

Hi, all!

brainstorming on digital story assignment

I haven’t decide the way I would use to describe my life and my goals at OSU, yet. But I’m thinking of working on “adjustment” as my topic of digital story. If its task is to tell people about myself, I think it would be a good idea to highlight my adjustment process here at OSU, as well as Columbus. Telling how I’m getting used to new place in terms of academic and personal life, I will be able to share my stories and strategies on embracing new environments.

So, my rough idea on the structure of story will be as following:

Part 1. How I moved in to Columbus and what I did to settle down in new place?

Part 2. First impression on OSU and gradual changes in my feeling and attitude

Part 3. My goals and motto as a graduate student.

These are very tentative ideas. I will think more on this issues not only about topic, but also about making film as well. Since I’m not good at working with Photoshop or editing video, it is a big burden for me to complete. I will work on it so that I can find the most effective way to deliver my idea.

Say hello to new class mates!

Hi, I’m Jin Hong Kim from EDULT 5901 class.

I don’ t do blog and hardly leave messages on  SNS such as facebook and twitter as I prefer to share my thoughts and feeling on my life with only a small number of friends and family. So, so it is a little with awkward for me to write this kind of “open” space, though this blog is not genuinely an open space.

Just like the majority of this class, new international students at OSU, I came here about a month ago. I thought it would be enough time for me to find my routine here. But, I’m still having pretty much hard time to adjust a new environment, especially getting used to driving. So, I’m wondering how other are doing  so far in terms of adjusting and embracing a new life and what their strategies would be to “survive” in Columbus. Hope we have some chances to talk about and share some stories as we get to know each other!

Bye!

Jin Hong Kim.
