Born and raised in Guangzhou, China, Xiang got his B.S. and M.S. degree in modern mechanics from University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei — a sister city of Columbus, OH in eastern China. After coming to the United States, he obtained his M.S.E. (master of science in engineering) from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and Ph.D. from THE Ohio State University.
