Outreach

The Anderson Group is involved in a variety of engagement activities through the academic year and summer. Below are a few examples:

  • “Sail-Car”Competition
Students participated in an after-school event at the Franklinton Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. OSU Materials Science and Engineering undergraduates Evan Jenkins and Travis Peters challenged MS and HS students to build car that is powered by wind. Each car had a sail that was deployed using special “shape memory” wires that change shape when heated. When students connected the wires to batteries, the wires heated, changed shape, and deployed the sail, allowing the car to take off to the finish line!
  • High School Interns
Students from Columbus Alternative HS and Columbus School for Girls have participated as interns, working with undergraduate and graduate students in the Anderson Group. Example projects include building a shape memory wire actuator. When activated, the device could lift several times its weight!
  • Materials Camp
Each summer, HS teachers from around the Central Ohio area attend a ASM Materials Camp to learn how concepts in materials science can reinforce concepts in math, chemistry, and physics. Students from the Anderson Group have participated in lab demonstrations involving shape memory alloys.
  • Metro HS – Introduction to Materials Science
In 2010, approximately 15 students from the Columbus Metro HS enrolled in the introductory course in materials science and engineering at The Ohio State University. Metro faculty Andrew Bruening and OSU MSE faculty Peter Anderson worked closely to refine the presentation of concepts and supplementary lab activities to aid in mastering course concepts and skills. The Metro HS students performed as well as undergraduate students at OSU!

  1. Dear Dr. Peter Anderson,
Department of Materials Science and Engineering
    The Ohio State Uniersity.

I hope you are safe and sound amidst this pandemic.

I, Debanshu Banerjee, am a 4th year undergraduate student majoring in Metallurgical and Material Engineering, Jadavpur University, India. I am writing to ask about opportunities related to graduate research under your guidance beginning from fall 2022.

I have conducted research in the field of machine learning and computer vision in CMATER Laboratory under the guidance of Dr. Ram Sarkar, department of Computer Science and Engineering, Jadavpur University. Following this, I have been a summer intern under the guidance of Dr. Anish Karmakar, department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee where I have worked on the computational modelling of structure, property and processing correlation for intercritically annealed dual phase steel. Currently I am working under Dr. Taylor Sparks, University of Utah as an undergraduate researcher on the topic of computational methods for characterisation of materials using machine learning and finite element simulations. Besides, I am pursuing the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship, 2021 where I am working on digital image correlation adapted on damage and crack mechanics under Dr. Ilyass Tabiai, Ecole de Technologie Supérieure, Montreal, Canada. Besides my departmental subjects, I am familiar with simulation based topics like know finite methods simulations using ANSYS and moledular dynamics using GROMACS.

I have been following your research website thoroughly for quite some time and have read some of your publications such as “Hall-Petch relations for multilayered materials”, “Coupling between martensitic phase transformations and plasticity: a microstructure-based finite element model” and “A phase field–Finite element approach to model the interaction between phase transformations and plasticity in shape memory alloys”. Your research areas of interest align with my current reserach interests and future goals and your work has motivated and interested me to pursue higher studies in the field of materials science. I would like to know whether you have any open PhD positions in your research group for fall 2022. I would also like to know the deadlines for applications, scholarship opportunities and the requirements for international students.

If there is any additional information that you would like to know about me, I would be happy to provide that to you.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    With Regards,

    Debanshu Banerjee
