Year in Review

This past year at the Ohio State University was a whirlwind, which I’m sure many college students say. I actually quite enjoy looking back over the past year, because I can see the growth that I went through. I believe that I have really solidified myself as a person, in terms of personality and goals, and no one can take that drive away from me. I have improved my conflict resolution skills and found my stances, “be kinder than necessary” and also “your personal life doesn’t give you the right to be a bad person.”

A huge personal/social/academic achievement for me was rising to the President position of the Society of Environmental Engineers. Until now, I was Service Chair, and I made my point by participating in service events and the annual design competition. I am so excited for the future in this club; already this summer I am working on the fall AWWA conference and I couldn’t be more excited.

A professional accomplishment was that I acquired a part time job on OSU’s campus, which will allow me to get some extra spending money and build customer service experience, and for the summer, I have wonderfully gotten the opportunity to do legislative work with the Maryland League of Conservation Voters. OSU has helped me so much with this, allowing me to learn greatly and create a wonderful network.

G.O.A.L.S.

My overarching goal as a student at the Ohio State University would be to graduate from the university in the fewest years possible with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering and a minor in Science and Engineering Public Policy. Ideally, if the years do not add up, I would love to pursue a second minor in Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife. This is just the general overview of what I want though, in reality this major goal is made up by a crazy variety of other goals.

Thus far, I have sadly not been on the right track to applying to my major, but after careful reconsideration, I have put together a new plan and a new spreadsheet for the future which has my classes all planned out. I have chosen to dedicate myself to a public policy minor, so I can get a broader view of it, with an emphasis in economics and econometrics. Sadly, I won’t be able to pursue the second minor, but I would love to add some research into the mix. Overall, this year was went well, but I would definitely like to amp things up in the fall.

The project that I completed for my Green Engineering Seminar class was centered around silver nanoparticles. Over the summer, I did a lot of research in green initiatives to improve water infrastructure and the access to clean water in third world countries. My group came across the idea of using silver nanoparticles as a quick, easily reproducible way to do so. The silver acts as a catalyst breaking down pathogens such as E. Coli. The only issue is that while it works on the bad germs, the effect on the overall environment is still unknown.

About Me

Hello!!!

My name is Lipi Agrawal, and I am a first year pre-environmental engineering student at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. I graduated with an International Baccalaureate Diploma from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD. I am studying environmental engineering because I love the Earth, and I want it to not be a complete disaster by the time I am fifty years old.

Over the summer, I volunteered at Church World Services, as their climate change intern, and it was incredible. I got to work on the policy side of things, reaching out to policymakers, congressmen, and writing blog posts for the public. I also put organized resources and created excel maps on what CWS was doing in each specific country they were partnered with.
