Year in Review

Global Awareness

What have you done so far to develop your Global Awareness? How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal? (For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.)

This year I have taken several courses with international and globalist focuses, including History of Africa and History of Israel. These courses led me out of my comfort level and, as non-western history classes, taught me a lot about other parts of the world. I also do my best to be an informed global citizen by following current events and contributing my thoughts and ideas with my peers and professors.

Original Inquiry

What experiences have you had so far that have helped you to understand the research or creative process? How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal? (For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.)

Many of my courses have had a large focus on creative research and individual projects. This year I attended a play in the OSU theatre and learned more about the creative arts, then tried my hand at writing an original research paper about John Milton’s Paradise Lost which I just recently submitted for publishing at the Journal of Undergraduate Research at Ohio State. I will continue to work with research at high levels as I take two research seminars in history next year.

Academic Enrichment

How does your Honors Contract demonstrate a commitment to the goal of Academic Enrichment? How does your planned curriculum relate to your future aspirations? (Consider, for example, the following questions: Why did you choose the major(s) (and minor(s), if any) you chose? Why did you select the GE courses you have chosen? How do your selections demonstrate a commitment to excellence?)

In my Honors Contract you will see that I always choose to take “honors” designated classes when they are available. I believe that by taking the most difficult classes available to fulfill any given requirement—event those that consist of GE courses which have no real application to my career plans—I am challenging myself and teaching myself how to operate well in unfamiliar settings where I might be out of my comfort zone. I also take as many History and English classes related to the discipline of professional writing as I can, as this is a practice that I hope to master in a legal career.

Leadership Development

With which activities are you involved? How does your involvement contribute to your development as a leader? How does your involvement relate to your personal and/or career goals?

I am involved in the Pre-Law Fraternity at OSU (Phi Alpha Delta) and am also the new Vice President for the community service initiative known as Fresh Start. I believe in helping people and hope to one day become a lawyer who will fight for what is right and lift up the downtrodden individuals who have been left behind by our socio-economic system, so Phi Alpha Delta and Fresh Start both equip me with the leadership skills and knowledge that I need to one day make this happen.

Service Engagement

List the service-oriented activities with which you have been involved (both ongoing and short-term commitments). How do you plan to continue to engage with the community?

I believe in committing myself deeply to one long-term investment rather than shallow, surface-level involvement in several activities. That is why I have dedicated myself to the Fresh Start initiative at Ohio State and, as Vice President, will work to equip the homeless population of Columbus with necessities such as soap and other hygiene materials that should be afforded to all people.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: I plan on studying several different aspects of human diversity and global awareness during my time at the university. In many of the courses in which I am currently enrolled as well as those in which I will later be enrolled, global context is needed to explain current issues and to understand the problems that we face today. By being aware of these overarching global connections, progress can be achieved.
  • Original Inquiry: Even in my first term at the university, I have already been heavily involved in research both for class assignments as well as personal projects. I have utilized the libraries on campus as a resource and have been able to study several accounts of historical events such as the Civil War and the years that followed.
  • Academic Enrichment: I chose my majors—English and History—with the intent of going to law school in the future to become a defense attorney. Specifically, I hope to become a public defender because I have personally seen and also studied the existence of a large racial disparity in the sentencing of criminals in the U.S. legal system. By pursuing majors in both English and History, I trust that I will be able to acquire and practice skills such as writing, speaking, research, and contextual awareness that will be pertinent to a career as an attorney.
  • Leadership Development: As a student I hope to develop as a leader by being vocal and sharing ideas with both my classmates and professors on how to achieve change in our society.
  • Service Engagement: I plan on involving myself with one or more community service programs while as a student at the university.
