Why We’re Here

1As you attend class in your first semester, you will probably notice differences from what you were used to at home. It is normal to go through a transitional period, as you adjust to new methods of teaching and learning. This section will prepare you for what to expect at Ohio State, no matter what your field of study may be.

Before delving into the details, let’s take a moment to step back and think about the “big picture.” Here are some big questions:

  • Why are we here?
  • What does it mean to get an education?
  • Aside from earning good grades, what do you wish to accomplish between now and when you graduate?

Regardless of your answers, know that you are joining a learning community with your fellow students and the faculty and instructors who will guide your scholarly pursuits. Be prepared for your academic career here to be characterized by intellectual risk-taking, critical thinking, and collaboration.

On the website of the Office of Academic Affairs you can find the university’s Vision, Mission, Values, and Goals. The “vision” of the university is to “be the world’s preeminent public comprehensive university, solving problems of world-wide significance.” Its “mission” is to “exist to advance the well-being of the people of Ohio and the global community through the creation and dissemination of knowledge.” Know that you fit into the university’s vision and mission, playing an active part in its “creation of knowledge”!

As such, there is great value placed on students’ “critical thinking.” Professors here expect students to think for themselves, and to form their own, well-reasoned judgements in the face of a question or problem. Your instructors will probably care less about whether you can memorize what someone else has said about an issue, and more about whether you can offer your own well thought-out interpretation. You will be encouraged to question the authority of previous scholars, and to contribute your own original ideas. It may take time to feel comfortable with this approach, but know that your professors will respect you for taking risks when sharing ideas and offering new perspectives.
