Code of Student Conduct

The Code of Student Conduct is the university’s document which outlines “prohibited conduct” (things you’re not allowed to do), and how that conduct is addressed.

As stated in the introduction to the Code:

“The code of student conduct is established to foster and protect the core missions of the university; to foster the scholarly and civic development of the university’s students in a safe and secure learning environment, and to protect the people, properties and processes that support the university and its missions. The core missions of the university are research, teaching and learning, and service. Preservation of academic freedom and free and open exchange of ideas and opinions for all members of the university are central to these missions.”

Essentially this means that the Code is in place to protect students from behavior on the part of others that would detract from the learning experience.

Of particular interest to you, as you prepare for arrival, should be the section on “academic misconduct,” which explains what is allowed and not allowed in your academic activities. These rules are taken extremely seriously at Ohio State, and note that they may be different from those in your home country. Unfortunately, international students are over-represented in cases of academic misconduct, often because students were not familiar enough with Ohio State’s rules, particularly in regards to issues such as plagiarism and collaboration with other students. Therefore it is essential that you familiarize yourself with the Code of Student Conduct, so as not to fall afoul of its guidelines.
