Project Title: “Education, Community, and Art”
Mentor: Zulal Fazlioglu Akin – Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy
Introduction/Thesis:
The purpose of this project is to explore how community-based arts spaces use education, community-building, and artistic creation as tools for community development. Focusing on one art space, Junior High in Los Angeles, I will garner a glimpse at how community-based arts spaces operate in the contemporary United States. During a time when large art institutions are aiming a focus on curation and innovation and putting less priority on education and community engagement, the tools and values utilized and adopted by community-based art spaces can serve as a model and an inspiration. By highlighting tools of community building, education, and artistic creation, used by community-based arts spaces, such as Junior High in Los Angeles, this research will uncover how institutions of every size can utilize these tools in their own operations.
Ahhhhh AMAZING!!!!
