About NSCS

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is an honors organization that recognizes outstanding academic achievement among first and second year college students and encourages members to develop leadership skills through community service.

NSCS’s mission statement can be found at the top of this page. It reads, “Honoring and inspiring academic excellence and engaged citizenship for a lifetime.”

The Society was founded in 1994 at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. NSCS has active chapters at 218 colleges and universities nationwide, in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Chapters are involved in service to their campus and local communities, as well as scholastic and social activities.

NSCS is a highly selective, 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization. NSCS is a member of The Association of College Honor Societies and a recognized organization at campuses across the country, with new chapters being added each year. In addition, the OSU chapter of NSCS is an officially registered student organization at The Ohio State University, and we renew our status annually.

The OSU chapter is part of Region 2, and our Scholar Ambassador is Annie Catalano. Annie acts as a liaison between local chapters and the NSCS National Headquarters. She speaks at the Induction Convocation, occasionally visits campus to run workshops for members, communicates important information to the Executive Board and members, and generally helps us keep things running smoothly! Annie can be reached at catalano@nscs.org.

For more information on membership, including eligibility, induction procedures, and member benefits, visit our Membership page. You may also find information at our National Headquarters website, http://www.nscs.org, or by contacting one of our officers.

Membership

NSCS membership is by invitation only. Invitations are sent each year to first- and second-year students who rank in the top 20th percentile of their class and have a minimum 3.4 GPA. New members are honored at our annual Induction Convocation, held during Autumn Quarter.

The Ohio State University chapter of NSCS provides opportunities for community and campus involvement, as well as leadership opportunities. We also plan a number of social activities and hold general meetings about once a quarter.

Attendance at these events is not required to retain membership, however, your level of involvement is key to maximizing your NSCS experience. As a further benefit, this year we have implemented the Star Points program. Members receive Star Points for attending meetings and events, and those who have accumulated the most points will receive prizes at the end of the year.

There are additional benefits to NSCS membership. These include recognition, exclusive member discounts, members-only scholarships, career resources, and networking opportunities. For details about all of the benefits NSCS offers its members, click here.

There is a one-time membership fee of $75. The fee funds chapter activities, a personalized Certificate of Membership, the on-campus Induction Convocation, networking and career resources, scholarships, and leadership development (an annual leadership summit and opportunities to serve in national and chapter leadership positions). The fee also helps offset NSCS’ administrative costs. The fee is for lifetime membership, entitling members to on-going access to NSCS’ resources and services.

More information about NSCS membership can be found at our National Headquarters website, http://www.nscs.org. Our officers can also answer any questions you may have.
