My understanding is that if one flips an iPhone as shown in your graphics, the video will be upside down. The recommendation I received was that the volume controls should be down, so the iPhone should be rotated counterclockwise to shoot videos.
That is probably the best practice, but the footage can easily be rotated if it is recorded ‘upside-down’. The main gist is that if you shoot in the vertical orientation there’s no good way to turn something very tall and skinny into widescreen video.
