Journal 3

My first semester at Ohio State feels like it just started even though it is almost over. With the help of the Architecture Scholars Program I was able to not only make so many close friends that have similar interests as me, but I also get to live and interact with them on a daily basis outside of the classroom. The scholars program allowed us the interact, study, and learn together by helping each other because we live in the same place and take similar classes. Throughout my time here at Ohio State I hope to explore the theater department by minoring in scenic design which will later help me to obtain my masters degree. In my free time (if I have any) I hope to explore the art department at ohio state and possibly take some sculpture and installation art classes. Next year I am planning on participating in the STEP program to help myself get involved during my second year at Ohio State. I want to use my STEP money  for a personal and solo trip that would take me to different amusement parks in the United States such as Disney World and Universal and develop some sort of research project that will help decide what I want to do for my masters degree. I also want to get more involved inside the Knowlton School by joining AIAS, becoming a knowlton ambassador, and potentially participating in other events that Knowlton showcases. Over the summers between years at Ohio State I hope to become a peer leader that would allow me participate in more leadership opportunities and help first year students with their transition into college. As I become an upperclassman I hope to find different internships that not only have to do with architecture but also with my other interests in theater and amusement park design. Another important thing I want to participate in as a Knowlton student is study abroad. Im hoping to travel to either parts of Europe and Asia to explore different types of architecture to help broaden my views and knowledge in Architecture. Overall I couldn’t have had a better first semester as an incoming college student and I can’t wait to see where my future at Ohio State heads.

Columbus To Do List Part 2

The third location I visited for my Columbus To Do List was Pistacia Vera located in the heart of German Village at the corner of East 3rd Street and East Hoster Street. When first arriving at the building I noticed that the building was newer construction, but still fit in with the classical architecture in the German Village. The building itself was quite small, but it gave itself an image of the cute bakery in the neighborhood on the corner. There menu ranges from different french pastries such as macaroons, croissants, eclairs, and shortbread. On top of the french pastries, they also serve brunch items such as croque monsieur which is a french dish that is an open faced sandwich with ham and different cheeses. I decided to try the macaroons because they are my favorite desserts. I tried the toasted coconut, raspberry cassis, and cranberry orange. All of them were so good, but my favorite was the raspberry cassis because it was super sweet and had the perfect consistency for a macaroon. Overall, Pistacia Vera had a very calm and chill atmosphere that served really good food in the heart of German Village. I would 10/10 recommend and will be back soon. The second location I headed to was Rocket Fizz Candy Store that is located in the Short North in between East 2nd Avenue and East 1st Avenue. When I first arrived the storefront was very fun and welcoming with the neon signs and all of the colorful things displayed in the windows. When entering I saw huge arrangements of candy in all shapes and sizes. They even had a japanese candy section which had a ton of different candies that are hard to find in the states. One of the most interesting sections of the store was all of the different sodas that they had to offer. It ranged from different brands of sodas that had similar flavors and some consisted of some very different and almost disgusting flavors such as ranch and bacon. I decided to pick up some cream soda from a brand I never heard of before, but they had the coolest packaging even though there were many brands of cream soda to choose from. The cream soda I picked was very good and almost had a cotton candy flavor too it. Overall, I would go to Rocket Fizz again because they had some really interesting products that would serve as fun gifts for family and friends. The last location I chose to try was located in the North Market and it was called Bubbles. Even though bubbles is a tea stand I still really wanted to try it because it is more of a dessert tea because it contains boba. Overall the boba tea had a really interesting texture and flavor and it was something that I had never tried before. I really enjoyed it and I would of course visit again because everyone loves the North Market.

Columbus To Do List Part 1

I chose to do the ice cream and desserts themed list. I chose this list because I really wanted to see some of the best places to escape from campus and get some ice cream or something sweet to eat. I am looking forward to seeing different dessert places in the different districts around columbus instead of something on campus. The first location I went to was Simply Rolled located on the short north close to the intersection of high and 2nd street. I was most excited to try a different type of ice cream because they make the ice cream right in front of you and you have the option to create your own rolls. The ice cream is also served in roll form which makes it different and unique. The ice cream itself tasted super good and it wasn’t just good because of the way it looked. Even though the ice cream was expensive, I would recommend it to a friend because the location is right in the middle of the short north and offers really good tasting ice cream in a new and cool way. The second location I went to was Jeni’s Ice Cream also located on the short north located at the intersection of High St and Lincoln St. Jeni’s is a well known favorite in the Columbus area. Jeni’s offers a much larger menu than most ice cream places that has different and unique flavors for customers to try. I tried the wildberry lavender flavor and it was so good and was one of the creamiest ice cream flavors i have ever tried. Jeni’s overall provides a fun atmosphere for customers that serves delicious ice cream that was made and started locally.

OSU is everything I had hoped it would be. From the second I stepped out of the car on OWL move in day, I knew that I would have no problems being a buckeye. One of the best parts about welcome week was being an OWL. The OWL program not only allowed me to move in early, but it gave me experience at being a leader on Ohio States campus before the year even started and introduced me to people that were going to be living near me all year long. Other highlights of welcome week were getting to meet my roommate and other students participating in my scholars program. One of the first days of being on campus, I got to meet my mentor and explore downtown Columbus with all of the scholars students. After the tour, I felt like Columbus was already becoming a home away from home. Adjusting to the campus lifestyle was something that I knew I wasn’t going to have a problem with because I am a very independent person and enjoy having the freedom that a college student has. Syllabus week was a little daunting at first because there was a lot of information being thrown at us at once, but by starting right away and not allowing work to pile up I was able to adjust with time. Being at Knowlton and starting my degree in architecture is something that I have looked forward too for over a year. The work load is heavy for studio and lecture, but I find it not to be an issue because its something that I am interested in and have a passion for. I feel strong that I choose the right career path and I can see myself being very successful at Knowlton over the course of the next four years.  Overall, I feel like OSU is a place where I can learn, meet new people, and create an experience for myself that I wont forget through working hard and being the best person that I can be.
