Week 6 project: elements of art and design

The elements of art contain color, line, shape, form, value, texture and space. Color has three components: hue, value and intensity. In the picture above, there are a lot of colors. Line isĀ  the trace of a point moving in the space. In the picture above, there are many lines which make up the each rectangle. Shape refers to the region enclosed by lines. The shapes in this picture are mainly squares and rectangles and some other shapes like the contour of some furnitures and organic shapes like human. Form is similar to shape but it has three dimensions. In the picture above, there are people moving, books in the shelves and etc show the forms. Value refers to the lightness and darkness of colors so it’s feels like should be included in color. In this picture, the value of color is really dark and makes the picture gloomy. Texture means the tactile feeling of a surface. The texture in this picture is really smooth overall because it’s the texture of the handrail, the glasses and the column. Space is how the image in a 2D paper looks like real and 3D. The relative size of the people walking on the second floor and the shadows make the picture look 3D.

Balance refers to the equal distribution of weights of elements and the alignment refers to the places of elements. In this picture, the clouds are on the top, mountains in the middle and the sea at the bottom. The boats between the mountain and the sea aligned as a line in the middle and the left side and right side of the picture are almost equally weighed. These shows the balance and the alignment of this picture. Emphasis is when the important elements are visually dominant. The boat on the right side has the light and this looks like this is the brightest thing in the picture, and this is what emphasized. Proportion is the size of each element relates to each other. The proportion can be shown by the sizes of the boats because I was far away from the coast so it looks small while the boat on the right side of the picture which is closer to me looks larger. Movement refers to the relative motion of the elements in the image. In this picture, it’s clear that the water is moving as we can see the small waves on the surface of the sea. Pattern is the predictable arrangement of objects. The repetition of boats show the pattern of this picture. Contrast is the difference in lightness and darkness which can make the images look 3D. The shadows and the different color of the water as well as the clouds shows this is a 3D image. Unity refers to the cohesive feeling of the image. In this picture, the sky, mountain, the sea and the boats have a sense of harmony, so it’s really united.
