Executive Summary

Thesis:

Due to the global warming, the level of sea increase rapidly which decreases sea ice.  Under this circumstances, polar bears have a harsh living condition and they might be extinct in the near future. It is the time for us to do thing for polar bears and also for ourselves.

Arguments:

1.Before people went on this trip, they only express how much they love polar bears through words, but after the tour, tourists all felt like they must protect polar bears.

2.Due to global warming, glaciers are melting at a faster rate. In this case, polar bears are losing their homes.

3.More importantly, more and more polar bears move to land harm not only polar bears themselves but also harm our human being. As more and more polar bears come to land, the safety of people living in the Arctic area will be at risk because polar bears may attack residents.

Conclusion:

It is never too late to do something for polar bears and the environment and small things could help to make a difference.

Rough Drafts

Two arguments:

1.Polar bears play an important role in the ecosystem.

2.Decreasing sea ice level affects more than polar bears.

Outline of paper

Introduction:

‘Have you ever considered visiting polar bears in the Arctic?’ I believe most people have this dream in their mind but have you ever thought that what will happen if polar bears disappeared. You may shake your head and say that this is impossible; how can a polar bear withdraw without reason? But the reality is that our offspring are likely to have no chance to see the polar bear again. In one word, due to global warming, the sea ice is melting at an increasing rate which makes polar bears have a harsh living environment, and gradually the population of polar bears is decreasing.

First Argument:

People all need to protect polar bears.

Second Argument:

Due to global warming, glaciers are melting at a faster rate. In this case, polar bears are losing their homes.

Third Argument:

Although polar bears could find something else to eat, the intake of nutrition cannot meet daily required nutrition level. Gradually many polar bears died because of the lack of food or too tried on their way seeking food.

Conclusion:

It’s the time for us to do something to protecting polar bears before it is too late. Protecting polar bears not only means protecting an animal but also means saving our future.

The second and third argument

My second argument is that ‘Due to global warming, glaciers are melting at a faster rate. In this case, polar bears are losing their homes.’

Source to support this argument: “Polar Bear Habitat”. Arcticwwf.Org, 2019, https://arcticwwf.org/species/polar-bear/habitat/.

My third argument: Although polar bears could find something else to eat, the intake of nutrition cannot meet daily required nutrition level. Gradually many polar bears died because of the lack of food or too tried on their way seeking food.

Source to support this argument: Mahmood, Zahid. “Polar Bears Could Face Extinction Faster Than Thought”. CNN, 2019, https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/02/world/polar-bears-extinction-intl/index.html.

learn from Laura Fathauer’s presentation

In her presentation, I learned  that when we are searching for resource, we need to make sure weather is credible for us to use in our essay. And of course, her presentation challenge my thinking. After heard about her presentation, I learned that even a map, we could get a lot of information from it.

Application of TradeMark

I learned that songs, books, and some movies have copyrights to prevent them to be used publicly without getting permission from creators. In this case, when I am doing my project, I need to recognize if I need to get permission from the creator. In my opinion, we need to protect and promote copyrights, because copyrights help people to have the passion to create new things.

Annotated Bibliography

“Polar Bear Habitat”. Arcticwwf.Org, 2019, https://arcticwwf.org/species/polar-bear/habitat/.

This source is a brief essay from the WWF official website, and this mainly consists of four small parts. Each part of this essay gives me different perspectives about polar bears, for example, the first part gives readers the idea that why polar bears live on the sea ice, the second part points out that the situation of polar bears when they are living on the land and problems that may be accrued, the third part shows that the rapid decrease of sea ice and finally the last part showed their tracking of polar bears.

Mahmood, Zahid. “Polar Bears Could Face Extinction Faster Than Thought”. CNN, 2018, https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/02/world/polar-bears-extinction-intl/index.html.

This source is from CNN official website. This source mainly introduces the most recent situation about polar bears, and we could know that due to global warming, polar bears are decreasing at a higher rate. As we know polar bears need to eat seals, but today more and more ice is melting, and polar bears need to travel 1.6 times more to catch their food, under this circumstance, polar bears’ daily calorie intake cannot reach daily need, which make the number of polar bears decrease.

“How To Save Polar Bears”. Science | AAAS, 2019, https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2010/12/how-save-polar-bears.

This source is from a website called “Science,” and this paper is mainly about how to save the polar bears from the greenhouse gas perspective. The most important part of this source is that it contains an experiment in it, and the experiment is about how the emission of greenhouse gas could affect sea ice and polar bears. The result shows that if we could reduce the emission of greenhouse gas, the possibility of polar bears become extinct could reduce largely or even become zero. What’s more, sea ice would melt at a constant rate as temperature rises. In case, I could conclude that if people would like to slow down the disappearance of polar bears, we need to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas.

Rode. “Polar Bears Distribution and Habitat Association Reflect Long-Term Changes in Fall Sea Ice Conditions in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea.”  Arctic, vol.62, no.4, 2009, pp.405-417, http://content.ebscohost.com/ContentServer.asp?T=P&P=AN&K=47775415&S=R&D=a9h&EbscoContent=dGJyMMTo50Sepq84y9fwOLCmr1Gep7JSr664S7eWxWXS&ContentCustomer=dGJyMPGuslCuq7JNuePfgeyx43zx.

This article is mainly about how polar bears’ behaviors reflect some disorders in the natural environment, for example, the relationship between polar bears with land and ice. In this case, we could analyze the change of ice and the formation of ice, which could have further research about global warming.  And on the other part of this essay mainly discuss their survey methods and results. Moreover, this passage use the graph to show the data. In that case, it is easier for the audience to understand and seem to be more credible.

Thesis

My thesis is to advocate people protecting polar bears and show the importance of polar bears.

Expert interview answers

  1. Polar bears mainly live in Arctic.
  2. Higher temperature leads to less sea ice.
  3. We need to slow down the melting of the sea ice, and we should slow down the rate of temperature rise.
  4. Polar bears are the indictor species which means that their situation could reflect the situation of the entire ecosystem.
  5. Although the extinction of polar bears may not have a direct impact on human beings, it will reflect many environmental problems, such as global warming, etc.
  6. Best estimates say there are 20,000 to 30,000 polar bears in 19 different groups or populations scattered across the top of the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia.
  7. Become eco-friendly
  8. decreasing sea ice
  9. polar bears are on the top of the food chain of Arctic , if they extinct, other creatures would be affected too.
  10. Many marine communities depend on polar bears, walrus, seals, whales, seabirds, and other marine animals.
