Got Experience?

In Online Learning Strategies and Skills 1159, I learned about some important tips to avoid and prevent personal information from leaking, some beneficial online tools such as quizlet.com and prezi.com, which can improve and help my performance in school, and some tips of how to do research through google.com and library.osu.edu. Despite of all the things that I learned, I also learned about myself in this course. Furthermore, I learned about myself in this course. I learned that I am not a serious procrastinator, but I can alway find some way to avoid and prevent being a procrastinator in the future. In addition, one of the most meaningful experience in this course was the moment when I realize how important to have n-etiquette when use computer because online etiquette seems unnecessary and unimportant. In the future, I will definitely apply some of the things that I learned in this course. Absolutely, I will remember that I have to avoid plagiarism no matter what because my works have no value if I plagiarize.

This course covered a lot of information specifically to online learning. Basic technology information, simple online tools, and helpful online resources are the three major areas that I learned throughout the course. In term of technology, I learned how to secure my accounts online. If I want to have keep my accounts secure online, I should follow the three important tips that Ryan Watkins and Michael Corry mentions in E-Learning Companion (2014). According to Watkins and Corry, we should change our password at least every 6-9 months; we should have multiple passwords; we should have a app to keep and help us remember our passwords. Keeping these three essential tips in mind, I will have safe and secure accounts on the internet.

Not only that I learned some basic information to keep my online accounts secure, but the course also allows to discover some of the help tools that provide on the internet. Tools such as quizlet.com and prezi.com are extremely important because they are free and simple to use. quizlet.com is a website where I can make notecards for a psychology exam. Whenever I want to review the information, I can just pull out my phone or tablet, then I can review my psychology materials immediately. prezi.com is an online website where I can make free and impressive presentations. When I need to make a presentation for my English class, I can use it to make presentation and have no fear of not having a USB drive on presentation day. Knowing where to find online resources are very important to success in college, I located a few online resources where I often go and find necessary information. Ohio State University library, library.osu.edu, is one of the website where I can find my resources most of the time; especially, most of things that we do in library are free because I am a student at The Ohio State University! Finding articles, magazines, and journals, I go to the library because the library is where I can find reliable, valuable, and useful information.

Interesting enough, I learned about myself in Online Learning Strategies and Skills 1159. I learned that I am not a serious procrastinator, which means that I don’t always do my homework at the last minutes when it is due. Having a good understanding of myself, I will succeed in college. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses, I should exercise my strengths and fight against my weaknesses. Creating a time line on google excel is a great way to defeat the habit of procrastinating.

There are so many interesting tips that I learned throughout the course. One of the most meaningful experience in this course was the moment when I realize that online etiquette is a real thing. I should know how to represent myself on the internet like I am eating on a dinner table in a fancy restaurant. One of the most important netiquette is introducing yourself to the teacher even when we take online courses. When I take an online course, it is very important that I take time to introduce myself and let the teacher know about me.

Since there are a lot of helpful tips in Online Learning Strategies and Skills 1159, I will apply a lot of the information that are covered in this course. Plagiarism is a serious academic violation. I must remember the importance of avoiding plagiarism throughout my college carrier and life. I should remember that college is not a place to get a good grade, but a place to build a character. Character is more important than merely a good grade.

In conclusion, I enjoyed Online Learning Strategies and Skills 1159 overall. It has been a wonderful experience. Thank you very much instructor, Joni Tornwall. Thank you for your guidance and help alone the way.

Got Security?

Do you know how to avoid security issues when you use online technology? Well, in this post, I am going to show you a few tips from E-Learning Companion by Ryan Watkins and Michael Corry. Personally, I did not have any trouble avoid security problems when using technology. Perhaps, some of you might experience problems on the internet such as stollen password and lost of identity.

According to Ryan and Watkins there are three simple tips to avoid security problems when using online technology. First, it is always a good idea to change our password every 6-9 month (2014, p.77). When we change our password, there is lower chance for criminals to steal your identity, credit card information, and all other personal information. Second, it is a smart idea if we can use multiple password for different website (2014, p77). In another word, if we have a Gmail account and online banking, then our Gmail account password should be different than our online banking password.  Lastly, if you are afraid of losing your password when you have too many passwords at the same time, then you should use a secure password keeper such as Pocket, Keepass, and Vault to help you remember your passwords (2014, p.77). Bottom line is that we should have multiple passwords to avoid problems on online accounts.

By using these three simple security tips, you should be able to avoid and enjoy online technology. There is last bit of information that I discovered on my own, which is about the third tip from E-Learning Companion. Even though there are apps for smart-phone and tablet to help you remember and manage your password, but is it safe and secure? Thus, I think the best to help  myself to remember and manage online password is to write all of  our password down in a notebook or a piece of paper, then store it in a secure place in your apartment or house.

Good Luck,

Go Bucks,

Got Strategies?

Do you know how to take notes? Really. Do you know how to take efficient and understandable notes?

How many times, when you take notes on certain subject, do you copy word for word? Do you think before you write down certain notes? Personally, I found that I had a hard time to pay attention and take good notes.  It is not easy to take notes well in class; especially, when you are tired and stress about something.  Through this lecture, I learned that there are different ways of taking notes. Furthermore, different subject might be good when we take notes in certain style.  There are no specific way of taking notes. Taking notes are matter of personal preference. Ask yourself, which way do I like to take my notes?  Which way can I understand myself when I take notes in class?

There are a few things that we need to remember when we take notes.  They are extremely easy to say, but it is hard to do. First, listen.  Listen to the instructor. Listen and comprehend the materials that he covers in class. Listening means pay attention.  Second, Write.  Write down the lesson in your own words. If we can do these two step well in class, it will be much easier when we review for an exam.

No matter how tired you are, please force yourself to pay attention and take notes in class. Since you are there in the classroom, whey not use your time wisely?

Good Luck!

Got Integrity?

I am going to talk about the main points of the video that I found on YouTube. I am going to use note taking method to list the points clearly.  First, this video is about academic integrity.  Academic integrity is extremely important because without an integrity, a degreed is nothing. We need to consider the importance of plagiarism every second, every minute, and everyday.  If we don’t pay attention, we might slip into the hole of plagiarism. Second, I am going to point three very important points that UVic Libraries Music and Media Department presented in the video.  Finally, please consider the importance of plagiarism.  It is more important than an academic degreed.

Main Points of the Video:

Academic Integrity:

What is Plagiarism?

1). Buying paper from other authors and using other people’s ideas and sentences without quoting is considered plagiarism (UVic Libraries Music and Media Department, 2012).

2). Incorrect quotation is plagiarism (UVic Libraries Music and Media Department, 2012).

3). When we use our previous write in another paper without citing it, then it is also considered plagiarism (UVic Libraries Music and Media Department, 2012).

In this video, I learned something new.  I learned that when we use our own quotes from previous paper without citing it, then it is considered plagiarism. Interestingly enough, we can plagiarize our own works! Can we steal from ourself? Sure, we can. We can steal from ourself if we do something that we know it is wrong. When we lie or cheat to other people.  We think that we are lying to other people, but we are lying to ourself in the end. I guess they are right. Some how! We can plagiarize our own works. Plagiarism is not only about stealing, but it is also about your character.  What kind of person do you want to be?

Got Information?

Do you want to write an amazing research paper in you English class?  Do you want to get an A in your English class?  Well, finding reliable information is the first step that we need to do as college students.  When you are writing a research paper, it is essential that the information on the internet is valid before you use the information in your research paper (Michael Corry and Ryan Watkins).  When you find a source, especially, when you find a source online, ask yourself questions.  Ask that is this a valid source?  Does it contain helpful informations?  Does my source have an author’ name and credentials?  Does it provides the date of publication?   After you ask these questions, the chance of finding a reliable information is much higher.  If you are still in doubt of your source on the internet even if it qualifies all of your requirements, then put your attention to books.  Books in the nearest library are reliable.  Please remember that poor research information produces poor research paper.  In addition, when you do find valid information, please cite your sources properly.  If you are unsure how to cite your source, please click the link: http://www.citationmachine.net/apa/cite-a-book. This website is a platform to give students  an example of different citation formats.

Got Communication?

Communication, communication, communication…  I don’t know how important it is.  But it must be very important since chapter 6, e-Learning companion, talks about it.  Communication is essential for building a strong positive relationship in life.  We need to communicate with others in order to know them.  In order to build a firm relationship, we need to communicate with them first.  Therefore, a strong relationship comes hand in hand with communication.  In another word, the foundation of a positive relationship is communication.  As a student in college, there are two important tips that I would like to share with you.  First, when you have any questions on a topic, “don’t be shy” to ask your instructor through email because your instructor is “the most valuable resource you have for being successful in college” (Ryan Watkins and Michael Corry).  Even if you don’t have any question, you can always send an email to the instructor and introduce yourself to the instructor.  It is always a good idea to make a “good impression online” (Watkins and Corry).  Second, “don’t wait until the end” to contact your instructor.  It is not a good idea to ask for help in the end of the course.  Think about it!  Are you going to help someone you know personally?  Or, are you going to ask someone you merely know?  Of course, you are going to help the person you know better than the guy you don’t really know.  Please, communicate!  After all, it does you more good than harm.  It never hurts to communicate.
