About Me

Hello! My name is Sophie Zara and I am a first-year student from Mansfield, Ohio studying accounting at the Fisher College of Business. Even in just one short semester here at Ohio State, I have been able to take advantage of the many opportunities OSU and the Columbus area have to offer.

The most impactful experience so far during my time at college has definitely been my involvement as a Business Scholar. By living and learning with my friends and peers, I have been able to be inspired by the interests of my fellow cohort members. I have made life-long friends through this program and I am looking forward to growing with it in the coming years. So far, I have also been able to get involved with First Year Leadership Initiative and West Mound Pen Pals. Additionally, I am an EY Scholar.

Next year, I will help bring new Scholars into the program by working as an Honors and Scholars Ambassador. I hope to be able to help prospective students have some of the same great experiences I have had so far here at Ohio State!

Artifacts

During my first semester at Ohio State, I had the opportunity to take a freshman seminar called “Why We Travel”. This course was taught by Professor Jusdanis and we covered reasons for travel from prehistoric times when people traveled in pursuit of finding new horizons, to modern day when travelers are often considered tourists. As someone who loves to travel myself, I really enjoyed this class because I got to expand on my interest in travel while learning about real stories of people who had to travel for real reasons, like Marco Polo, who was one of the first Europeans to reach Asia. We also categorized refugees as forced travelers, which put the condition of being forcibly removed from one’s home into perspective for me. We also had the opportunity to learn about Professor Jusdanis’s extensive travel experience, which I thought was particularly interesting because he has been to so many places that I hope to go to one day.

The above picture is from one of my travel experiences to St. Thomas in 2014. As part of the class, we had to present on a favorite vacation spot or a location that we hope to travel to one day. I chose St. Thomas because of its natural beauty and its rich history as a colony of many nations.

This summer, I am looking forward to taking the knowledge I gained on this trip with me to Spain, where I will be studying abroad.
