Mentor Interview

I decided to interview my PSL mentor, Christen Hill. Christen is a 2nd year originally from Beavercreek, OH which is around 1.5 hours away from Columbus. Christen chose OSU because she had gained direct admission into the Fisher School of Business where she studies Marketing. Furthermore, a large part of her decision was due to the fact that OSU accepted her into the MSP (Morrill Scholarship Program). At this point in the interview, I could already tell that Christen was an extremely hard-working and accepting person. Christen chose to join PSL (Politics, Society, and Law Scholars) because she was interested in law and social justice issues. PSL provided her the perfect outlet to explore her academic interests with experiential learning, especially with the field trips.

Aside from Christen and I both being students in the Fisher Business School and PSL, we were both similar in our hobbies too. In her free time, Christen enjoys reading, collecting vinyls, and watching Netflix. Her favorite movie is A Walk to Remember and her favorite type of movies are romantic comedies. In terms of shows, Christen watches anything ranging from animes to live-action shows. Musically speaking, Christen loves R&B and Pop/Rap— especially The Weeknd.

I asked Christen about her values and she said that even though it is stereotypical, she values her friends, family, and education. Additionally, I asked her for some advice for freshmen and she said that we needed to become/stay open-minded and learn time management, especially for our General Education courses.

In the past, I took a journalism class where we had to interview people, but this was by far the best  interview I’ve ever done. I was shocked that I had so much in common with Christen academically, recreationally, and morally. Overall, I’m glad I got to meet her over Zoom and I can’t wait to meet her in person!

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

During my time at the Ohio State University, I want to partake in a study-abroad experience at least one time. I would love to go anywhere in the world since I want to learn about as many cultures as I can. However, I feel like going to a Spanish speaking country would be especially interesting for me since I took Spanish for six years. Another program I found interesting through the Office of International Affairs was the ECP and LIT programs. I think I would like to join one of those programs to get to know the perspectives of international students while also helping them become more comfortable at OSU. Additionally, I want to become more involved in OSU’s Muslim Student Association through their service and social events so that I can strengthen my faith and meet new people.

Original Inquiry:

When I was applying to OSU, I decided to apply to the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars program because I was interested in finding a close community of change-makers. Another reasons I chose OSU is because of the multitude of undergraduate research opportunities available. I definitely would love to be able to work under a professor I admire to help enrich my own knowledge along with others’. Ideally, I want to research topics in the fields of business, law, or ethics.

Academic Enrichment:

Currently, I plan to apply to the University Honors program at OSU next semester in order to increase the rigor of my classes as I do enjoy competition. In the past, I was in National Honors Society which focuses on service and academic excellence. Through NHS, I got a lot of my service hours in senior year through tutoring; however, I have been a tutor in Spanish, Algebra, and U.S. Government since sophomore year.

Leadership Development:

Ideally, I would like to join student organizations and work my way up the ranks. I feel like I am someone who has critiques on how to improve different programs, so being elected for a leadership position gives me the chance to pursue projects that I believe would benefit my community and hopefully let my mutuals have a voice through me (especially if they aren’t in the same club). In high school, I was Vice-President of Key Club, an executive board member of the Freshmen Mentoring Program, a New Student Mentor, and an Assistant Coach for the Middle School Speech and Debate team, so I already have some soft skills under my belt.

Service Engagement:

Since I was a kid, my parents have always emphasizes the importance of giving back. I grew up volunteering and I don’t intend to stop. So far, I plan to join A Kid Again @ OSU to write letters and interact with kids who are suffering from chronic illnesses. In high school, I was apart of Key Club and National Honors Society. Both organizations provided me with lots of service opportunities ranging from painting pumpkins with elders at nursing homes to handing out water bottles at Race for the Cure events. At OSU, I want to be able to engage in service learning opportunities on and off of campus.
