Year in Review

Sophomore Year

Global awareness is a very important aspect of the honors program for me. I have always been and always will be interested in the world and all the cultures in it. So far, I have done quite a bit to improve my global awareness. I have participated in clubs such as the East Asian Culture Club and J2K (an Asian pop based dance club) as well as gone to cultural events around campus such as Chinese New Year and Taste. I also briefly rushed for Kappa Phi Lambda, a multicultural sorority, and still participate in some of their events. I have also completed a full year of the Korean language and declared a minor in East Asian Language and Literature. I look forward to learn more about East Asian Cultures through my studies, attend many more cultural events, and also hopefully study abroad at some point in my career.

Original Inquiry, aka research, will also be a major part of my academic career as I plan on gong to either Vet or Graduate school. I have not too much on my own this year in terms of finding research, but I plan on looking more into it the next two semesters and possibly over the summers too. Also, I have a couple friends who work in a lab that could be beneficial to my interests as it is for the Vet School.

Academic Enrichment is important to the honors program and to me. Taking honors and upper level classes present me with challenges and the kind of experience I need for the future. My Honors Contract includes many upper level classes; especially in the sciences. There are also many honors GEs. These classes are very relevant to my major (Zoology) and my future career plans (Vet or Grad school) as well as my minor (EALL). I chose this major and minor because those are my two top interests: animals/science and exploring other cultures. Taking higher level classes in these subject areas will be a great experience for me because I will want to learn the material and challenge myself. Most of my GEs are also classes that I have interest in (especially Mythology and Abnormal Psych). Once again I am willing to take this challenging courses because I am genuinely interested in learning the material.

Leadership is something I am slowly becoming better at. I am involved pretty heavily in the dance club J2K. Although I am not on the E-board and have not officially been a leader yet, I am on my way. This past semester I was a “helper” which is essentially a leader-in-training in hopes of me leading dances in the future. I learned the responsibilities of the leader, helped teach the dance, and helped come up with solutions when we were faced with problems. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to become more involved in the future. Leadership is important in all career fields, but definitely as any type of doctor you want people to know you are confident and in control of the situation.

The main service activities I have been involved in have been through the Kappa Phi Lambda sorority when I was rushing. I hope to continue to be involved in their service projects even though I am not a member of the sorority. Besides that, I would love to get to go on a service trip at some point during my academic career as well.

Global awareness is very interesting because it deals with the world as a whole, especially places outside of the United States. I have always been fascinated by foreign places and curious about the different cultures. I have already had the chance to study other cultures through my diverse friends. They include Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Libyan, and Cambodian. One of my dreams is to be able to visit Seoul one day with my half Korean cousin. In college, I would love to study abroad and have a chance to study more cultures. Learning more languages is also an interest of mine. I have attempted Korean and I know a good amount of Spanish. Becoming a zoologist would also involve studying animals across the planet from tons of different places around the world.

Original inquiry is important to the career I wish to pursue. Wanting to be a zoologist, I will have to do a lot of research so that I can fully understand this field. Having more freedom with the research topics makes it a lot more exciting to me. Personally, I love to learn new things; as long as I have some interest in them or think it’ll help me in the long run.

Academic enrichment has always been important to me. For the majority of my school career, I have chosen to challenge myself more than most students would. I believe it’s a waste to take a class where I can earn an A without putting any effort in. The fear of getting any grade lower means it’s the type of class that will help me in the long run. I believe this can also help with my career pursuit as I will be constantly challenged in the world of zoology. I will need to be prepared for any possible situation that may arise, whether I know how to fully solve it or not.

Leadership is important in the real world as people look to and trust leaders more than followers. Coming up with original ideas and following through on them are important. One way I can get involved with leadership is taking on a leadership role in any club I get involved in, or even starting my own club. I could also lead a research project or service project as well.

Service engagement is important and can also be very simple. Doing something as simple as helping a student with carrying something or cleaning off a chalkboard for a professor could be considered service engagement. Other ways I could get involved with service could be through service trips through the school or through other events such as Buckeyethon. Helping people will always be a part of my life and therefore I will constantly be involved in service engagement.
