Is It Time to End Tipping?

Today’s Wall Street Journal (Feb. 29, 2016, page R7; online version is here) printed  an article I wrote.  They asked me to be part of a debate on “Should tipping be eliminated in restaurants?”  I took the “yes” side.  This is a follow on article from the piece I wrote a year earlier in February 2015 (see the original piece here) that advocated the same idea.What is a different about today’s Wall Street Journal article is that they put some extra data and context around the piece.  They provided data from their own online poll that showed respondents preferred 2 to 1 to eliminate tipping and also included a large number of comments from readers on why tipping should be eliminated.

Multiple times each year I tell MBA students never believe the results of online open polls since these polls can be easily swayed.  That caveat aside, it was a good feeling to see “data” backing up my claim beside my article, even if that data is not trustworthy.
