Homework 6

After spending around 6 hours to complete what is depicted above, I had to cut some things out. I wish I was able to work on this more and probably will in the future; however, this is what I was able to complete before the end of Sunday.

Homework 5

During my assignment, I was struggling to work with the ink in a way which would allow me to create gradients instead of harsh transitions. In addition, it was hard to add as much detail as I would have liked because of how you apply the ink. I was able to find a small detail brush that I had used for my painting class last semester and work with that for some of the smaller areas and more intricate parts of my piece. The last struggle that I had to overcome was the brush strokes showing when the ink dried, I added more water and worked quickly so that I did not overlap them and make the area darker. A big risk that I took was having a still life which was really dark in nature; however, I feel that this did pay off since filling in the dark areas was similar to the negative space still life we did in class. One very helpful comment that I remember was that someone had used a cue tip in order to apply the ink which gave a unique texture to it. In my approach I feel that I should have worked with water more to dilute instead of using the pure ink and wiping some off onto a paper towel to make it lighter. I would also take my time and figure out how to create a smoother gradient on the umbrella, so the is not such a sharp line between the grey and black regions.
