Year in Review

Global Awareness: After spending 7 weeks in Europe in the summer preceding my first year, I was able to gain a great sense of what it means to have global awareness by interacting with all sorts of different people and cultures. I plan to continue to grow this global perspective by taking courses such as GERMAN 2252H which explores German literature and I have already completed ANTRHOP 2200H which allowed me to better understand the roots of humanity. Combining these courses with my appreciation for music and art will allow me to have a well-rounded global awareness.

Original Inquiry: Original inquiry has been a staple of my time at Ohio State. I have worked in Dr. Brillson’s condensed matter physics lab since my first semester freshman year. I have already been an author on a published paper, with another soon to be published. This past summer, I was awarded a scholarship to conduct research and this upcoming summer I will be conducting research at the University of Giessen in Germany where, not only will I build my global awareness, but I can continue to expand on this original research in another lab setting.

Academic Enrichment: The core of my undergraduate experience needs to be grounded in academic enrichment. I am doing this by taking the most challenging courses possible, namely my math major, in which every course is at the 4000 level or higher and my honors physics degree. I also am planning to take Honors level GEs so that I may learn interesting, cross-disciplinary material. My pursuit of a challenging double major will also push me to work harder and be focused on my studies.

Leadership Development: Leadership has always been a focal part of my life, and I fully intend to continue to lead. As a member of H2O Church, I have assumed the role of a small group leader in which I lead and engage in thought provoking discussions where I push my peers to better live out their faith on campus. I hope that as I continue to be a part of H2O, my leadership role will only increase.

Service Engagement: Having participated in the OSU Community Commitment during my first week at OSU, I developed a great sense of community service while volunteering at a local library. This experience encouraged me to seek out more service opportunities. As a member of H2O, I am surrounded by like-minded people who also wish to engage in this service which makes it easily accessible to me. As part of this group, I volunteer once a month at the North Linden Miracle Garden which seeks to provide good quality produce to the community members of this impoverished neighborhood.

Global Awareness: After spending 7 weeks in Europe in the summer preceding my first-year, I was able to gain a great sense of what it means to have global awareness by interacting with all sorts of different people and cultures.  I plan to continue to grow this global perspective by taking courses such as GERMAN 2252H which explores the Faust Theme and ANTRHOP 2200H which will allow me to better understand the roots of humanity.  Combining these courses with my appreciation for music and art will allow me to have a well-rounded global awareness.

Original Inquiry: I fully intend for original inquiry to be a staple of my time at Ohio State.  I am actively seeking research opportunities in the fields of material science and nanotechnology for the summer before my second-year, which will hopefully translate into more research in the ensuing years.  I also intend to engage in an REU the summer of my third-year which will give me more valuable research experience, while also exposing me to like-minded students from other schools.

Academic Enrichment: The core of my undergraduate experience needs to be grounded in academic enrichment.  I am doing this by taking the most challenging courses possible, namely my Honors Math Track in which every course is at the 4000 level or higher.

As a member of Athletic band, I plan on learning from upperclassmen and absorbing as much knowledge as possible.  In this way, when I am older, I can become a leader of the baritone section and teach the younger members. This kind of leadership is so important because it perpetually breeds the next group of leaders.

Service Engagement: Having participated in the OSU Community Commitment during my first week, I got a great sense of community service while volunteering at a local library.  This experience encouraged me to seek out more service opportunities. As a member of H2O, I am surrounded by like minded people who also wish to engage in this service which makes it easily accessible to me.  And by having those around me that support this endeavor, it will make it far easier to follow up on.
