Year in Review

Over the course of my first semester, I have been completely submerged in a new and unique environment. I have learned the feeling of independence and being in complete control of my own success and education. One of the biggest obstacles was leaving behind my bad habits in high school. In high school, I had a poor sleep schedule and poor study habits. I only got by doing the bare minimum, however, during my first semester at Ohio State, I greatly improved my study skills as well as developed a healthy and consistent sleep schedule. Abandoning these bad habits stemmed from a sense of self-discipline and self-motivation. I learned that you get what you work for and for some, that will require harder work than others. I also learned that the quality of work is just as important than simply working hard. Although most of my time has been spent maintaining good grades and developing good habits, I made sure to leave plenty of time for myself and have met many new people. I even picked up soccer as a new hobby. Not only did I grow as a person but I also learned a lot about what interests me and what I want to do with my future. Throughout high school I was strongly geared towards math and initially applied as a Math Major. After taking Biology and a Molecular Genetics course, I discovered my new interest in the biological sciences and switched my major. Although my time here at OSU has just begun, I am looking forward to the upcoming challenges and opportunities.

Image result for fairlawn country club tennis

During the two summers following my junior and senior years of high school, I worked at a country club in Akron, Ohio called Fairlawn Country Club. This was my first job and gradually introduced me into adulthood. My responsibilities at the club included coaching summer tennis clinics for kids, working in the pro-shop, and maintaining the clay tennis courts. At the club, I developed many new skills and built upon old ones. Because my job entailed a variety of duties, I learned to be very versatile and developed a strong organized work ethic. Being able to coach kids and speak with members on a daily basis greatly improved my communication, etiquette, and also built upon my relations. I learned the basics of networking from speaking to a diverse group of club members all with different occupations and backgrounds. I also worked with a variety of kids aging from toddler to teenager. Coaching demanded being fun, engaging, energetic, having a strong knowledge of the sport, and above all else patience. Explaining to the kids how to hit a forehand or a backhand not only allowed me to help them but also myself in regards to improving my own tennis game. Being a coach also pushed me out of my comfort zone. Previous to this job, I had never worked with kids younger than elementary school yet, several of the kids in the lower levels were only two years old. Speaking to them and gaining their attention was certainly a challenge however, over time I was able to break the communication barrier by adapting my speech and showing lots of encouragment. Working at Fairlawn has allowed me to develop character, qualities, and skills that will promote success in my academic career.

About Me

Hello! My name is Kyle Yamat and I am a first year at The Ohio State University. I have always been driven to follow a career path in Medicine. Ever since I witnessed a passenger collapse on a plane 30,000 feet in the air and watched doctors resuscitate him back to consciousness, I felt motivated to learn more about the field as well as the physicians who practice it. Since then, I have taken a strong interest in mathematics and the sciences that create the very foundation for these professionals. I also began shadowing various physicians at the Cleveland Clinic where I observed a number of doctors operating on patients with precision, confidence, and composure. There, I learned more about orthopedics, anesthesia, neurology, ear, nose, and throat, endocrine, and general surgery. I was able to see both the calm and the hectic environments of a hospital and these experiences only further motivated me in my aspirations. I intend on majoring in Molecular Genetics with a minor in business. I am self-motivated, driven, and very excited to embrace this new environment while also expanding my own experiences.
