SUMMARY
The microbes that live on us and in us have been shown to affect our health in many ways, including our risk of cancer. Some bacteria are thought to cause more inflammation, which can increase our cancer risk, and some bacteria lower inflammation, which decreases risk. However, few studies try to actually change the microbes to decrease inflammation. We propose to give people who are at high risk for developing lung cancer a black raspberry nectar to change their microbes, reduce their inflammation and thereby reduce their lung cancer risk. Patients at high-risk for lung cancer from the OSU lung screening clinic will be recruited for the 10-week study intervention. Participants will be randomized to receive either a black raspberry nectar beverage (BRB) twice daily for a total of 4 weeks or a Placebo drink that looks and tastes identical to the BRB. All participants will undergo a washout period between Weeks 4 and 6 (no beverage) and will then cross over and receive either the BRB Nectar or Placebo drink for weeks 6-10. Patients will receive compensation of $25 for each study visit they complete (4 visits total).
