Personal online learning experience

Online learning

            With the progress and development of science and technology, a lot of careers also have extremely changed. For education, also, traditional face to face learning methods, online teaching is becoming more and more popular, especially in college. There are some unique features of online learning than face to face teaching. Firstly, students do not need to use lots of time to commute between home and school. Secondly, Online learning will not be interrupted by any weather or traffic reasons Students can take an online course anywhere and anytime, only if they are accessible to a stable internet connection. It is much more convenient for students to learn knowledge.  In Illinois online article mentions “Taking an online course also means that you don’t have to commute to class, which means less time spent on the bus and more study time sitting on your couch, the sound of a crackling fireplace in the background. You no longer have to worry about driving in the snowstorm and missing an important class!”

Even this is not my first time to take online study, I did not encounter some technological challenge experiences indeed. But I am more easily distracted by using a laptop to study. When I watch online lectures to study, I always text on Facebook and browse some shopping websites instead of focusing on an online video message. This is a common online study problem, which is related to most of the students in college. There is an article related to this question, which states that “Researchers have found, unsurprisingly, that students in online courses are often multitasking with non-academic matters – that refers to time spent on Facebook, browsing on Asos and scrolling Twitter timelines – more than their peers in physical classrooms. Sampling nearly 300 Kent State students enrolled in both online and on-campus courses, Andrew Lepp and his team found that students are 25 percent more likely to multitask in non-academic work when enrolled in online courses compared to their peers in face-to-face courses.”

I usually use the OSU online libraries website and walk-in tech hub finding some supports. Sometimes, I may use some learning resources in the Writing Center Online service. I take English 1110 this semester. Finding a professional place to receive suggestions is a good way to get a higher grade on writing an essay. Writing Center Online Service is a good place for me to approve my essay. The consultants always give me some advice or help me to build up my essay. Our English professor is very appreciated us to find support from the writing centre. Tech hub is a good place to help you solve some technical problems, like applying implications or download software free. To succeed in this program, I think the main elements are effort and self-discipline. I need to be responsible for myself and my assignment. I need to watch every online lecture with self- discipline. Immediate discussing with peers or TA is also important to ensure success on course.

Online learning: Online reading and note-taking

Online reading and note-taking

            Nowadays, most of the textbooks or reading materials will release on carmen or online bookstore. Online reading is a crucial part of participating in any courses. Some students may meet the same problems as Sarah’s. I have to admit that I also meet some difficulties when I start to read online.

I took an online anthropology course this semester, which requires us to buy textbooks on the online bookstore. After we pay for an accessible account, we can log in any devices to read online. I thought it was convenient for me to read anywhere for the first time. But I find a problem sooner. When I quit that website, I lost all recording for previews reading history, which means I always start on the first page. To catch up with prior reading, I have to record the current page on notes. It wastes lots of time to locate it back. For note-taking, we need to carefully manage what is worth writing down at each moment. It easily creeps in messed results if mistakes happen. I always do the same mistakes in history notes. Because the professor’s speech is too fast to catch up with. I always write without listening to the rest of the sentences or points. I just focus on what I heard of and immediate record it. Unfortunately, I have already missed lots of key points before I figured out what is happened.

I solved this problem with online note-taking. By reference to Wikipedia, “Note-taking is the practice of recording information captured from another source”. I tried to use the app “Notability”. In this app, I try to summarize all the points of knowledge I need to learn and put them all in this app. As I had an apple pencil, I can directly write on it. It was very convenient. On the second midterm, I use my notebook to do with the midterm. For each question, I searched for the keyword and check the page which has this knowledge. I could always find a solution to these questions. For this midterm, I get a 59/60 grade.

Note-taking is a very good solution for online reading. When we read online, we will remember less by online reading. Now we have a note which summarizes all-important knowledge for us. I think now I can handle any online reading.

 

Online learning: Time, tasks and environment management

Smartly Arrange your time for online learning

             While I take Anthropology 2200 online course this semester, I meet with some problems with time conflicts, task, and environment management. These problems are similar to Sarah’s problems. Sarah’s problems are mainly focused on forgetting an assignment, finishing assignments on the last several hours and distraction from others. My problem is the same as her in some aspects. This online course is much more difficult than other kinds of online studies. Because each week we have module discussions, three comprehensive questions to answer, a lab quiz and a 30 minutes online lab. I have to say that these assignments need more than 40 minutes to finish each of them. I usually think the online course is easy to finish and learn about it. However, I met problems in my first-week missions. I just underestimate the difficulty in these online lab and lab quizzes.  For time conflict, I just wait until the last day to start with it. So I cannot finish all of these multiple-choice in the last 40 minutes. And I admit that I used to start online learning on my dormitory bed. Because I think this environment is comfortable enough, to begin with. Sometimes, it is not! If your dormmate chats with friends in the room, this environment is noisy and easily distracted from your academic video or readings.

After the first week passed, I start to schedule my assignment orderly and divide each assignment to a certain date. Because I cannot leave all this assignment for one day to finish. It is too frustrating and stressful sometimes. I find it is effective and efficient to promise a better grade each week. Once I talked to my friends about my situation on online learning. My friends give me lots of advice about solving my confusion. Firstly, I can finish an assignment with my classmates, doing as group work. We can exchange our ideas and get immediate feedback from them. That method is effective to finish multiple tasks at the same time. Moreover, the dorm is not the best choice for study. We must find somewhere quiet enough, like the 4th floor on the 18 avenue library. Also, using google calendar is the best way to manipulate your learning time. In an online article named improve time management with google calendar, the author lists lots of beneficial patterns in a google calendar. Nowadays, I use one of those patterns frequently, which is incorporated into your calendar with Gmail. It is convenient for us to check our schedule just using Gmail rather than back over that online page.
