Summary of ESLTECH 2011| Three Takeaways

Learning Style|Does it help?

It doesn’t help a lot for students to learn if they are taught in their preferred way. Since our brain works as a whole, for example, when we are listening to something, it doesn’t mean our visual processing just stops working. In other words, a meshing of learning(teaching) styles like VARK wouldn’t result in vast differences when it comes to testing. At the same time, compared to a specific learning style, efforts are better support for students while they are learning new information. If a teacher only teaches students in the ways they like, it might impede them from developing and practicing the skills of gaining knowledge from different kinds of ways.

Note Taking Strategies|Cornell Method

Cornell Method is a note-taking method that includes the five steps, record, question, recite, reflect and review. This method works better for liberal arts courses like history and psychology than science courses like math. When I first start using this method, it was hard to keep up since it requires lots of work before and after the lecture. However, when it comes to midterms and quizzes, this method reduced a significant amount of time in reviewing class materials since I already had a good understanding of them. With that, I was able to do more practice questions, which really helped me on the exam. Therefore, I recommend this method to you guys.

Time Managment|Assements

As students, we all experienced the time when we have all the exams and assignments due during 1-2 weeks of time. However, when we are facing these pressures, nothing works but manage your time well and solving them one by one. What I did was list all the assignment due date and exam days within two weeks, and had my calendar next to me. And fill up my time with specific things, such as, finish the introduction paragraph of my essay, or review chapter 3. And set up your due date for all the assignments. Remember, never push everything to the last day. For example, if I have an exam and a paper due on Friday, you can start just focusing on your essay, and finish it by Tuesday afternoon, and leave Wednesday and Thursday for reviewing the exam.
