Maintain Motivation (Module 7)

It’s really useful for a student to build motivation, which could help us to study more efficiently and effectively. For example, my major is psychology, which requires lots of reading and writing. Sometimes, I feel really tired of those assignments and it becomes hard for me to keep focusing on the study. Building motivation is really useful for me to maintain the study quality and decrease distraction. My motivation for studying psychology (reading the textbook and related research papers, and writing the papers) is that I can use that knowledge to help others in the future, and it can also help me understand myself better. Students should link the college courses to their application in real life, which could help students maintain their motivation. (Module 7, slide 4)
It’s hard to maintain something in our study or work time. We are easy to be distracted by lots of things especially when we study online. I used to visit Youtube or shopping websites after I had been studied for a while, and it was hard for me to stop. It was a big distraction for me. I suggest fresh college students that download an app that could block the distracting websites during you study time. SelfControl is a really useful IOS app that could make a blacklist for your distracting websites. You can set the study time, and during this period you’re not able to access those websites even you turn off your computer.

Searching and Researching (Module 6)

We always do the searching and researching during our academic study life. Although searching and researching seem to be similar and we always discuss these two terms together, they are completely two different things. Both searching and researching are helping us to solve our questions but researching requires more facts of information, and we have to understand more about the related topics and concepts. Compared to researching, searching is easier and more directive, which you can know your answer right way by using the searching engines. (module 6, slide 3)
Researching is very important for students in college and it’s hard to do research efficiently and effectively. This is a useful tip for research in module 6, which I have been using. Getting ready on the pre-searching well will improve your quantity and speed on the research. Students are supposed to prepares the research questions, which are related to your main concept. And the most important thing is finding the keywords for your main concept. (module 6, slide 13) You need to type your keywords while your searching relative academic articles and information if you identify the actual keywords you will find the information exactly as what you want. Otherwise, it will waste lots of time to select useful information.

Tips of Note-Taking (Module 5)

We usually learn the course knowledge through the lectures. However, the lecture always covers a huge amount of information, and it’s hard for us to catch every important information only by listening. Taking notes during the lecture will help us record important information, and using some strategies could help us take notes more efficiently and effectively.
A good note could help students organize and remember the information quickly, which leads to a successful academic study. The most useful tip of note-taking I learned for this module is that only write important information on the note and find an appropriate speed of note-taking. We cannot write every word that the lecture covers. There is too much information and the writing speed is much slower than the speaking speed. If we write every word that we heard, we might miss lots of important information that will show up later. So recording information selectively and maintain an appropriate speed of note-taking will help us study more effectively. (module 5, slide 7)
I noticed that write notes on the paper could help me remember more information than type notes on the computers. Therefore, I suggest students write the notes on the notebook because it will help you focus more on the information instead of just copying the information from the lecture. Writing notes requires a deep process of information, which will help students understand and remember the information effectively.

The Online Learning Skills (Module 4)

There are so many college students take online classes, and they have to do all of the studies online, such as reading the textbook or materials and watching the lecture videos. Therefore, it is necessary to develop online learning skills, which will help us study more efficiently for online classes.
The module four introduced some useful online reading skills that I have been using. I think the two most useful reading skills are that highlight the important information and summarize the key idea of the reading content. (Module 4, slide 6) Those two skills help me a lot for online reading. I usually used the iPad to read the e-book and highlight the important information by the blue highlighter. After I read all of the content, I always go back to read the blue parts again. Moreover, I usually summarize a key idea for the main concept and write it next to the title. It will help organize those new pieces of knowledge so that I can understand and remember them quickly.
I will try a new strategy that draws a symbol on the confusing information. It always took me too much time struggling with confusing information. I will draw a symbol on the confusing information and check it after I read all of the content. I think it will save more my time and help me understand the content better.

Tips for Time Management (module 3)

There are 24 hours per days, but I always feel the time is not enough for me. I think I do not have enough sleep time and my sleep quality is really poor so that I feel really tired and lack of energy when I study or work. When I do my homework, I still feel that I do not have enough time to finish them so that the work’s quality is worse than my expectations. I have to make up my remained assignments every day, but those assignments are supposed to be finished in previous days or weeks. Therefore, I never finish my scheduled assignments per day on time. This is a vicious circle. I get overwhelmed and stressful very often.

The most useful content I learned from module 3 is that “Get more out of your 24.”(module 3, slide 11) There are so many people who take much more classes than me, and sleep less time than me. But they do not feel tired and overwhelmed. Because they make their every day, which are 24 hours organized and valuable. I started tracking my time one week ago that I made a spreadsheet about all of my activities so that I can analyze my time spending. I noticed that I wasted lots of time on checking the social media. Once I started to check it, it’s hard to stop. So, I changed my habit, I stopped check my phone during the study time, even on the rest time. It helps me same lots of time and work more efficiently. I also learned a new strategy that break down the large tasks into small sections to avoid the procrastination. I will try to use this strategy to improve my ability on time management in the future.

Tips for Academic Email (Module Two)

The most useful thing learn in module 2 is how to send a formal and appropriate academic email. We use email every day to communicate with our professors, TAs, and classmates. There are so many students in one class so that our professors and TAs might not be able to recognize our faces and match our faces to our names. Therefore, It’s really important to write an appropriate email to create a good impression to others.

The tips I have been using are that write the specific course number and greet your professors or TAs respectfully, write the content brief and easy to understand and close the email with your full name. Moreover, I try to avoid spelling errors, and sarcasm and slang. (module 2, slide 5) After I used those tips, my email became easy to understand, and few people reply to me with the question about my content itself. It helps me communities more efficiently through email and helps me create a good impression to others.

I strongly suggest students read the class syllabus carefully before you ask your professor questions, especially questions such as the late assignments, extra credits, and etc. since you can find your answer form the syllabus easily. And when you send an email to your professor, please indicate that you already read the syllabus. (module 2, slide 8)
