Module 7: Maintaining Motivation

I think the most useful thing I learned in this module is how to eliminate the interference on the Internet. I can use some methods of this module, such as turning off the e-mail, computer, telephone, to reduce the number of possible online interference. We can eliminate many interference factors that disturb people. I will try to use only 5 minutes to browse some important parts of the Internet and use some tools, such as Freedom, Seflcontrol, Cold Turkey, to help me deal with distractions. I have used some music to improve my attention in the study. For me, some light music can motivate me. At the same time, some songs I like can help me finish my homework quickly. I can use some ways to relieve the pressure in the future. For example, I can accept the things I can’t change and make up my mind to form new habits, which will help me cope, have time to enjoy with friends, and explore new activities and hobbies. If these methods do not work, I will change them from the module to other methods. I advise students to find an appropriate solution to the distraction problem. Distractions are similar to procrastination and reduce productivity to a large extent, so if you want to have a path to success, distractions are an obstacle you need to eliminate.

Category: (Module 6: Searching and Researching)

I always think they are almost the same thing, however, with this article I understand many differences of search and research.

Module 6: Searching and Researching

The most useful thing I learned in this module was the difference between search and research. I think they were very similar before, but after learning this module, my view on these two things has changed a lot. In fact, search and research are two completely different things that should be done in different ways. Searching usually find facts, researching requires the quality of the information you find rather than simply find the facts. I’ve used Wikipedia to search for information about topics in some of my courses. Many things and topics can be found on Wikipedia, which usually explains in detail what I need. In the future, I could use some search engines in this module. I use Google almost every day, which is too familiar to me, but I do not use searching engines like Yahoo frequently, so I can use them to find more things, and use them frequently to expand my vision. I would recommend students to find a reliable source by some methods. For example, whether the source comes from a reputable scholar of organization, are the credentials of the author listed and whether the source relates to what you write intimately. Reliable sources can improve the overall quality of articles, which is what most people need to find.

Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

The most important thing I have learned this week is several note-taking techniques. It includes the Cornell system, outlining and mind-mapping. Through in-depth understanding and practice, I found their respective use methods and advantages. As for me, the mind-mapping is appropriate. It uses the skill of paying equal attention to words and pictures to show the relationship between different levels of themes in the hierarchical graph of mutual subordination and correlation, and to establish memory links between theme keywords and images and colors. The establishment of the mind map is conducive to the comprehensive and systematic description and analysis of the problems I think about, and it is very helpful for me to have profound and creative thinking on the problems I study, so as to find the key factors or key links to solve the problems.

And I may try to use the Cornell Method to take notes in the future. This method of dividing notes into sections is still new to me. It is divided into five steps, record, reduce, recite, reflect and review. Each step is closely related. This note-taking method emphasizes the extraction and summary of keywords, as well as the understanding and recall. It is ideal for fewer, more specific lecture notes. Its advantages are the clear structure, emphasis on the summary, easy to review.

Module 4: Web-Enhanced Reading and Study Strategies

In this module, the most useful thing I’ve learned is how to use a variety of useful online learning tools and resources. Through the article named “20 Useful Websites Every Student Should Know About”, I learned about all kinds of learning tools and software. There are many of them I think is very useful for me just like StackExchange. Stack Exchange is a network of Q & A websites on different topics. Each website covers a specific topic, in which the questions, answers, and users are subject to a reputation reward process. I can find many answers I want to know on this website, and it is variety. Also, Todoist he mentioned is a great tool too. This is a daily task tracking software. With this software, I can focus on the right things. I can easily organize my tasks and projects so that I always know what to do next. In addition to this, one of my favorite software recommendations is Grammarly. This is a small program. The biggest benefit of this application is that it can be used to improve my spelling and grammar problems during the writing process. And it also offers suggestions for synonyms, which makes my writing more readable and accurate. Overall, this app is one of my biggest helpers in writing. All of these things I learned from my study this week. For a student, being able to find some practical learning tools is a great thing for our study.

Module 3: Online Learning Strategies and Skills

In this module, I think the most important thing is to mention how procrastination occurs and how to avoid it. As the article said, we always procrastinate easily because we can always find many excuses. Which leads to the rationalization of delay. And I have a deep understanding of this. I personally have the problem of procrastination. For example, I often put off things that I think are too troublesome. Sometimes I find excuses to procrastinate, even if the task is within my self-assessment. For example, with a few weeks to go before the exam, I can review later, and my homework usually can’t be finished until the last day. So I think what I learned this time is very helpful.

According to what I have learned, reversing the causes of procrastination is a very effective way. That is to say, we can try to make the tasks that have no motivation to complete more interesting. Then try to think about the task from different perspectives to make the idea of completing it more attractive. Another thing I think I can use in the future is to list the costs of procrastination. This method is very effective when I postpone a larger task. Adding all the ways procrastination can affect my social life, my finances, my stress, my happiness, my health, etc. To my list will increase my anxiety appropriately. This anxiety, to some extent, makes me want to solve the problem as soon as possible.

Module 2: Communicating and Collaborating

This module mainly discusses the academic content of communication and cooperation, and there are many useful parts in practice. For me, the most useful thing I learned in this module is email. In most cases, the first way to communicate with people is through email. This is also the first impression most people have of us. I think I’ve put some tips on how to write discussion posts into practice. I took a lot of online courses and asked me to write discussion posts every week, so I developed some ways to write. I always try to find something different and unique. For example, in a class on anthropology, the topic of a discussion post is to let people talk about the impact of weather on different species and how it affects the overall development of people. I will try to think about some materials related to the class topic and the information I find. Then, I wrote the basic information of weather change, the living environment of different species, and the living habits of different species. Then I explained how climate change has such an important impact on these places and species. The practice is an important part of group communication, everyone needs to play their own unique advantages. We can set up a group with GroupMe, often in private. We should also have a detailed discussion with our professors or teachers to see what we can improve. The group project is a good way to exercise comprehensive ability.
