STEP Reflection: British Invasion

What?

For my STEP experience, I went to England for the last two weeks of May and saw the sights and sounds of a busy city, all the while learning about the Beatles and the culture of England. We were only in London for a week then went to Liverpool, the hometown of the Beatles, for the rest of our stay. We basically went to many sites that were relevant to the Beatles, like Paul and John’s childhood homes, and some other places that were not so relevant to the Beatles. We got to see a large amount of London and Liverpool because of the amount of free time that was incorporated into our itinerary created by our awesome coordinator, Kelsey Poole.

So what?

I learned a lot about England and the English culture. It is so vastly different than our culture but also very similar. I was able to see the similarities between England and the US and that shows how the relation between our country and England is unique and how much the US has drawn on England’s culture to have what we have today. I also had more experience of going out of the country by myself without my family being there with me. It was a new experience and one that I have definitely learned from. It was great seeing the different culture of England and making new friends.

Now what?

The things I experienced and learned during my experience abroad has not changed any academic or personal goals of mine. I still want to be a pharmacist and I still want to travel around the world. This trip has opened my eyes to the things I can and want to still do. However, I learned that no matter how many times to go to a country, you cannot get a good grasp of the culture or country if you only stay there for two weeks and stick to the touristy areas. Personally, I would like to be able to branch out more and be more outgoing. That is the only goal that has changed since going on this trip.
